Someone tell me why I shouldn't get dollar ties from ebay.

I think ties are stupid in general but obviously they're necessary. I just don't get what makes a Kent Wang $80 vs all the realllllllllyyyyyyyyy cheap ties from Ebay.

Bad ties don't hold a good knot. And look bad in general. There's a midway between $1 ties and $80 ties.

In all honesty I think some would consider an $80 tie the middle of the range considering Hermes and Ferragamo ties are $180 each.

Could be. Didn't say anything about middle of the range. Just pointed out that there is more variety than $1 ties and $80 ties.

Its funny you mention Kent Wang. I remember when he first got in to the business and I only knew him from his egullet foodie posts. Glad to see that he is seeing success.

I've got a Kent Wang tie, and it's worth every penny of the $80 I paid for it. Far and away better looking and feeling than any other one I have.

I have come to the opinion that ties are so self-evidently absurd that I don't want a part of any social or professional scenario where they are mandatory.

Maybe a funeral, depending on the person. Otherwise open-collar is always preferable.

I really can't think of anything that a man has in his wardrobe that is completely pointless besides the tie(I said *man*)

I don't understand em. Reading SF it seems only 85% of the forum hates thetiebar.com which means less than 3% of the general population is wearing something nicer. I will probably get two from them and see what I think.

I guess I just don't get how good a necktie needs to feel?

KP I am confused that you are such a watch aficionado but scoff at ties. The differences between a $300 and a $3000 watch are much more subtle than the differences between a $10 and $100 tie. Generally speaking cheap ties suck because:

1. The cheaper material does not hold its shape and it gets twisted and stretched where you tie the knot after only a couple of uses.
2. They are usually thinner, so the knot and dimple look like ****.
3. Their patterns are (usually) more boring but somehow simultaneously less versatile.

And I don't think you can debate that a tie is much more visible than a watch.

I can understand not wanting to spend $100+ on a tie if you don't wear one regularly, but you can get very high quality second hand ties for like $40. Generally speaking I'd wear a $10 dress shirt before I wore a $10 tie.

KP, like DFII said, the difference in the quality of the fabric is pretty huge.

1. Very true
2. Mostly true. The true 7-fold tie is unlined and will be quite thin but will make a great knot.
3. I find most ties to be garish and ugly regardless of cost. You have to hunt a bit to find ties that are quality and tasteful. But I do like boring ties.

I think I'm in the minority when it come to what I'm willing to spend on stuff that won't be worn much. I'll spend quite a bit on these items because 1. If I'm not using it much, I won't have to buy it very often and 2. Things that are worn infrequently tend to be for special occasions so I don't like to chintz on them.

Alright you guys convinced me. Someone told me I'm better off having a big selection of inexpensive ties than a few overpriced ones, guess they're way wrong.

Part of this may stem from the fact that I can't tie a tie. I went psycho last night trying a half windsor so I made a video and mirror flipped it so I can compare to the youtube videos I had to watch.

Still couldn't figure it out, maybe you guys can help http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG7yfKl0yeE

feel free to mock relentlessly while you're at it

Haha. Pretty funny stuff.

You're being too sloppy with it. Be tight and exact with each movement. You'll get it with practice, but you can't tie it like a shoelace. Try holding the knot in place with one hand and wrap it with the other. There is an art to it and you have to get a feel for how much tension to use, but you are being way too loose with it.

*shrug* are you sure I'm not missing a step or doing something wrong? I tried it going as tight as I can so that everything folds up and bunches, and I've tried it so that nothing bends, and it all ends up looking the *exact* same

Really feels like I'm doing something backwards. Tie comes out way to the left and there's a huge lump of crap on the right

PS ties are really ****ing dumb

edit 2 I just looked at the vid again and I think maybe I'm getting it and I was just going too tight? I don't know

I have no idea if you're missing a step. I just noticed that you were tying it too loose. Don't go tight either. I use that gamepad. It's awesome.

oh okay. that kinda looks like the youtube tie except the middle of the tie part doesnt go inward(dimple?)

I love my n52, too. I had the old one but this is a lot nicer. The firmware is def terrible though.

You can tell I love mine cuz the paint has worn through on a few of the buttons.

Can you tie a four in hand? That's pretty much the only knot I use, but I have a pretty short torso so I'm tying the tie at a wider point than most would be.

You're tying that at completely the wrong spot in the tie. That knot, whatever it's called, uses a lot of tie. You need the thin end to be at least a button and a half higher when you start, which will correct the length but also mean that you're tieing the knot where the tie is still thin which will give the knot itself better shape.

IMO lined boardshorts, relatively short (I like a 15-16 inch outseam and I think I'm about your height) and maybe a bit retro but still pretty plain. Something like Sundeks but obv there are much cheaper alternatives that look just as good.

I'd avoid anything that resembles the blousy leg, elastic waist style that people wore in the 90s, or the past the knee huge floral print crap abercrombie churned out for the last 10 years.

Swell.com seems to have a decent selection and I think you can pretty much always find a 15%-20% coupon code.
