El,

Sane and sound advice that I will not adhere to this summer, my dear old friend. Thanks. Age prerogative trumps all. Ray Zee would say the same.

Why bring back "not-good" cocktails?

Yeah, that wasn’t really our point with Pépé Le Moko. We were all so tired of these new bars where there would be some mixologist standing there telling you what you could or could not drink. It was starting to feel like bars were turning into record stores, but with ****tier music. So our philosophy from the beginning was, "There are no bad drinks, only bad bartenders." We love Mojitos, and we make the best one in the city. Nobody rolls their eyes at Pépé when you order one. We love Long Islands, and Sazeracs, and Grasshoppers, and Oaxacan Old Fashioneds, and Amaretto Sours, and so on and so on. We just love drinks there, we don’t really care if someone else thinks they’re cool or not.

Now, we are getting somewhere.

To repeat - Long Islands, the drink for this summer. Engage!!

Yep...a big part of the reason why I posted it (and the Portland connection, obv).

I ordered a boulevardier barrel drink last night at a bar, but called it a bull-va-deer. I wish I were corrected (it took me a bit to learn vieux carre at a local bar) guess it's a tough spot for bartenders, I wasn't corrected, but when he was talking about some drinks I heard the way he pronounced it.

So I really like the campari I bought recently, and plenty of drinks with it. Given my like for campari, would anyone suggest any other liqueur to try?

Aperol.

Use it in negronis, americanos, or similar and see how you like it.

Also try making an Aperol spritz, perfect summer afternoon drink.

Chicago,

Gran Classico for sure

Others to try:
Cynar
Aperol
Zucca
Nonino
Averna
Montenegro
CioCiaro

Made another Boulevardier last night, incorporating some of the suggestions in this thread (1.5:1:1 rye, cherry garnish, on rocks rather than up).

The rye was certainly very prominent, but overall a nicely balanced drink. Personally I'd maybe up the Campari very slightly while keeping the rye:vermouth ratio the same.

Of the Campari alternatives listed above, I've only tried Aperol. I find it lacks the bitterness I like in a Negroni (not tried in a Boulevardier), but I do like an Aperol Spritz. Gran Classico seems impossible to get in the UK, but will definitely pick up a couple of the others.

If you change your red vermouth to either Carpano or Maurin, you will wonder why you never used them before
07-12-2015 , 08:18 AM
Maurin doesn't seem to be available here in the UK, but will definitely pick up a bottle of Carpano Antica Formula soon.

Antica Formula is pretty damn good.

Thanks for the suggestions Diablo and Timon.

I unexpectedly found Carpano Antica Formula in a local supermarket, so having another Boulevardier tonight:

Admittedly it's not a fair test as I've used a different rye too, but have to say this drink is significantly better than the last one I made. Thanks for the recommendation.

High West is my preferred Rye for Manhattans, so it's not like you made a bad choice

Try the carpano in a Manhattan to really tell the difference it makes in drinks.

Tried this yesterday. Standard IBA proportions. Confirmed that I won't be able to go back to cheaper vermouth.

(Feel free to mock the coaster)

Looks delicious. I love carpano antica but had an issue with the bottle size. 1L of vermouth is a lot to go through in time for it not to go a little flat.

^that's what 375mL bottles are for
07-28-2015 , 06:14 AM
Yeah 375ml is actually the only size my local shop had, which is ideal for me.
07-28-2015 , 09:25 AM
I've only been able to get the 375ml online. Unfortunately, my local shops don't carry it.

So what's everyone been drinking lately?

Had a really good Remember the Maine the other night, that's one of my favorites.

Anybody got any recommendations/recipes for mezcal based cocktails?
11-13-2015 , 10:56 AM
mesacline > mezcal

11-13-2015 , 11:28 PM
What's the Porsche drink? Can't find it by googling around, never heard of that one.

French 75s are good!

Not boring if you know what you like.

What do you like normally?

I'd google around and look for some recipes with ingredients that you have and/or enjoy and start there.
