Sounds great.

Btw, season 2 of Chef's Table just hit Netflix; even if you aren't a foodie, this series is a must watch. I'm only two episodes in and the stories are just incredible. And of course, the production is top notch.

21 Days Under The Sky

4 guys go from SF to NYC on an Easy Rider style motorcycle road trip, minus the getting shot at and beat up with baseball bats. They all had these homemade bikes they were obsessed with, and of course they kept breaking down every other day.

There was a narrator constantly waxing poetic about riding motorcycles. It got old fast and struck me as emo.

I think you'd have to be really into motorcycles to like this.

feral,

LA Plays Itself was fantastic, one of my fav docs of all time.

I don't think I've ever seen a similar doc about a city. However there's a great YT channel called Every Frame A Painting. It's about cinematography and movie editing, made by a guy from Vancouver. He made a short spinoff doc called Vancouver Never Plays Itself:

The Hornet's Nest

Father/son journalists Mike and Carlos Boettcher are embedded with US troops for a few months in Afghanistan. Kinda similar to Restrepo/Korengal, but from the point of view of journalists and not soldiers.

While I was watching it, I was suspicious that some of the sounds of bullets whizzing by were sound effects and not real. According to some IMDB reviews, they were indeed sound effects, which is lame. War doesn't need sound effects.

I think it's still worth a watch for anyone interested in war docs.

Thanks! I just watched that, pretty neat. I forgot that Vancouver is such a popular location for movie shoots.

I felt like there were so many details and nuances to the story that were left out of the doc, probly because it would make it too long. The story is better told in text than video. Watching a video of someone explaining a long series of internet forum posts is always clunky.

I haven't seen either of those bitcoin docs, but the title "the end of money as we know it" sounds just slightly sensationalist.

There's been a few reviews of this ITT but I just saw it tonight. I'm kinda surprised this type of **** doesn't happen more often. Good doc tho.

The sex and drugs scene of the London gay community. Very graphic. Produced by Vice.

The Wolfpack

6 brothers growing up in a public housing unit in NYC. Their father is an abusive hippie nutjob who doesn't let them go outside for months or even years at a time. They're homeschooled by their mother. They pass the time by watching and making movies. When the oldest boy is 15 he starts going outside on his own, and eventually the brothers go out together and explore the outside world.

Bellevue: Inside Out
Pretty much couldn't look away for the entire 80 minutes doc. Available on Youtube. Tracks the experience of several in-patients suffering psychotic episodes during their 2-6 week stays each at a NYC hospital. Also follows the doctors for a 9-month period. We always hear the terms "psychotic" or "mental illness," but this film explicitly shows the sobering reality of what that sickness entails. Some of it is heart-wrenching, so definitely not a date night movie. Made in the early 2000s, so the quality is a little dated, but it gets the job done.
I am working at a summer internship that involves some mental health issues in NYC, so perhaps this was especially interesting to me. But I still think it is a great doc.

Ethical note: I'm a little unsure how they got permission from these clearly psychotic patients, some of whom were involuntarily admitted, to show their faces. But alas.

Hitchcock/Truffaut

Director Francois Truffaut interviewed Alfred Hitchcock and turned the transcript into a book, published in 1966. This is about that interview, the making of the book, and how the book and Hitchcock's work has infuenced directors since. Interviews with Wes Anderson, Martin Scorcese, and other directors.

I've always loved Hitchcock and his style, so it was really interesting to hear great directors talk about their perspective on his films and how it influenced them.

The only Truffaut film I've ever seen is The 400 Blows. I thought it was meh, but I didn't really understand it at the time. Maybe I should watch it again, and some of his others.

I really liked this.

"Down with the clown till I'm dead in the ground" is kind of catchy.

I just watched Samsara - directed by the same guy as Baraka (Ron Fricke) and in the same vein. It's available on US netflix.

Just watched Samsara, probably most intense viewing experience I've had. Visually stunning with some uncomfortable moments. Highly recommend.

Finders Keepers

John Wood has to get his leg amputated after a plane crash. He asks the doctors to let him keep the leg. He covers the leg in embalming fluid and puts it in a smoker, which he keeps in a storage unit. Because he's an alcy and oxycontin addict, he either can't or doesn't pay the monthly fee for the unit. All his stuff gets auctioned off.

The guy who buys the smoker happens to be a super narcissist who's goal in life is to get on TV and be famous. When he discovers a human leg in the smoker, he starts to think this could be his big break. John Wood finds out what this guy wants to do with his leg, and he wants it back. Antics ensue.

Watched "Tickled", a documentary about a tickling competition, and holy **** was it good. It's like Louis Theroux meets King of Kong. Even though it quickly gets dark, it remained funny throughout, with several laugh out loud moments serving as relief to the incredibly frustrating turns the subject matter takes.

It's as entertaining a movie as it is investigative journalism, and I can't recommend it enough:

Peace Officer

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4079142/

Quote:
Peace Officer is a documentary about the increasingly militarized state of American police as told through the story of 'Dub' Lawrence, a former sheriff who established and trained his rural state's first SWAT team only to see that same unit kill his son-in-law in a controversial standoff 30 years later. Driven by an obsessed sense of mission, Dub uses his own investigation skills to uncover the truth in this and other recent officer-involved shootings in his community, while tackling larger questions about the changing face of peace officers nationwide.
This was a great doc. It's basically about the improper/overuse of SWAT teams. The interviews with the SWAT team members are bizarre, it's like they've been brainwashed.

Will watch Tickled when I can find out where to watch it for free.

Welcome To Leith

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3962848

Quote:
'Welcome to Leith' is a feature documentary chronicling the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. Filmed in the days leading up to Cobb's arrest for terrorizing the townspeople on an armed patrol and his subsequent release from jail six months later
Racists are hilariously rustled 24/7. I wish they would've investigated the NSM a little more to find out what exactly their plans were and how they were operating.
