Watching the NOVA episode on Fukushima. 6 workers knowingly took on lethal doses of radiation going into one of the buildings to try to open relief valves (they are alive but at a huge cancer risk). 50 workers stayed behind when it looked very likely building 2 would blow up and kill them all (also would have sent radiation over Tokyo).

I wonder if this happens in any country except Japan.

Thought Crimes - The Case of the Cannibal Cop

An NYC cop is on trial for conspiracy to commit murder. However, there's no evidence that he ever hurt anyone and it's not clear if he actually had any plans to hurt anyone. The dude was really into cannibal fetish porn and frequented a forum where he discussed kidnap/murder/rape/cannibalism in graphic detail with randoms. It's not clear if he was only fantasizing/role playing or if he was seriously conspiring with people to commit actual crimes. He also accessed police databases to get names and addresses of "potential victims."

It presents an interesting discussion about if this was an actual consipracy to commit crimes or if the guy is being accused of nothing more than some Orwellian "thought crimes." And where should the law draw the line?

Aside from that, it's hilarious how dumb this guy was with regard to computer security, especially considering that he really didn't want his wife or anyone to find out what he was up to. His wife busted him by 1) installing a keylogger on the computer which also took screenshots, and 2) by reading emails to/from some people he met on this fetish forum, and she easily accessed his yahoo email account because he used the same password for everything lol. The wife then freaked out because the guy was having convos about torturing/raping/murdering/eating his wife!

If he didn't cross the line, he went right up to it.

Cocaine Cowboys would have been better without Billy Corben's typical incessant, blaring background music.

Thanks for the rec, it was good. I think my only complaint is they jumped around so much that it was hard to get a clear timeline of events.

The decision to sue the Rick Ross rapper guy was pretty lolbad. How did his lawyer not know about the statute of limitations? Or did he just not give a **** cuz he'd get paid either way?

I don't understand how you could compare this to Cocaine Cowboys. That's like comparing Le Mans to Talladega Nights just because they're both movies about car racing.
