Re: Documentaries

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the military suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. All of you know this world famous picture taken the morning after what some call the "Tiananmen Square Massacre".

The Tank Man

This 3 hour documentary goes in depth about background, the beginnings of protests in April, the suppression and the aftermath. I haven't watched it completely yet, but the first 90 minutes are very good so far.

It's safe to assume that there are going to be some rather powerful images that might not be for everyone.

Here are three other of his films (I think he has 8) that I really liked. I look forward to seeing the rest of them

Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. - about an electric chair inventor who denies the Holocaust happened.

The Thin Blue Line - About a police murder and a guy wrongfully convicted for it.

Vernon, Florida - Can't describe it. Wacky people.

Some other of the many documentaries I love:

Crumb - about a crazy comic book writer/artist.

Rank - professional bullriding circuit

Murderball - wheelchair rugby. intense.

Spellbound - spelling bee

Word Wars - scrabble

Cowboy del Amor - about an old guy who sets up American guys w/ Mexican brides

That's just a few. Happy to elaborate on any of them, but I really enjoyed all of them. They all followed the same pattern of focusing on the stories of a few key participants in these worlds.
Not a documentary but for anyone who has seen murderball and wants to see what an actual game looks like there're a bunch here, they only showed snippets in the film iirc. The 2010 canada v usa game is a good one.

Snow on tha Bluff

The story of Atlanta robbery boy and crack dealer, Curtis Snow, who stole a camera from some college kids in a dope deal and made a documentary about his life.

Indie Game: The Movie

Really liked it, and would suspect many itt would as well. Gives an intimate glimpse into lives of indie game programmers.

I'm not sure how often they add new ones as I only stumbled upon the site a few days ago, but they have several hundred documentaries, sorted by category and with a description.

Re: Documentaries

watched Grinders Documentary 2011
http://www.grindersdocumentary.com/

i would award it 3/10

the main premise of the film is to focus on the actual filmmaker, trying to make a living from solely from poker after just having a child with another one possibly on the way, grinding is going to have a lot of impact on his life in this situation

instead the film focuses mainly on a 25 year old who still lives at home with his mum, the proprietor of a gambling club trying to regain access to his club after a dispute with his landlord (WHAT HAS THAT GOT TO DO WITH GRINDING!!!!!!),and a father of two

you don't really the impact poker has on any of these lives and you do not really care

the choice of music is absolutely awful

EPIC LOL MOMENT FROM THE FILM
----------------------------------------------------

actual filmmaker talking

" the late night and unreliable income are taking there toll and now with the second baby on the way I'm feeling even more pressure to do well at the tables"

film then switches to him playing poker at the club

"but getting dealt poker jacks definitely helps"

LOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

------------------------------------------------

thank god somebody put this on the internet for others to watch

the actual filmmaker states at the start that he left his job took a break from film making to look after his family and after the recession found it hard

your always going to find it hard making garbage like this

So many good ones. Could go on & on. Here's a few - sorry if they have already been mentioned.

Man on Wire.

The one where Timothy Treadwell gets himself & his girlfriend eaten by a grizzly bear.

Fog of War

March of the Penguins
