10 most disturbing documentaries

9. Just Melvin, Just Evil
A documentary about a tormented family who suffered from sexual abuse and substance abuse because of one man. It leaves you wondering how can one man be so destructive? Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY4eHaiVK9s

10. Earthlings
One of the most intense documentaries made about animal abuse. Footage contains graphic material. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCRspwfKHmI

Enjoy!
I have seen 2, 4, and 9.

The subject of 4 is bizarre in the extreme, and the perverse reaction that he received is shocking. 9 is depressing but well done. 2 is just alright.

Paradise Lost
Berlinger and Sinofsky's documentary of a gruesome triple murder in West Memphis, Arkansas and the subsequent trials of three suspects, takes a hard look at both the occult and the American justice system in 'small-town' America. Three teenagers are accused of this horrific crime of killing three children, supposedly as a result of involvement in Satanism. As in their previous documentary, things turn out to be more complex than initial appearances and this film presents the real-life courtroom drama to the viewer, as it unfolds.

The internet's own boy, the Story of aaron Swartz, discusses his background, events surrounding his arrest and eventual suicide. I thought it was really good. Well made, well covered and interesting and discussed philosophical things outside of his life I enjoyed.

We Cause Scenes - About the Improv Everywhere movement. Only about 50% through it atm, but it's pretty good. So far I've found it pretty interesting and funny.

Transcendent Man

Scary. Humanity has too many flaws/ kinks that need to be worked out before we even consider developing some of the technologies in this documentary. I think of guys like bush or cheney being able to live forever.. makes me shudder. I say scary because guys like to jump first ask questions later.. and now we're dealing with potentially the extinction of the human race.. it shouldn't be rushed.

Blackfish

It was ok. The Cove was along the same vein, thought it was better. Big corporations are bs, and we need to take a step back before we jump into things. Just because we can doesn't mean we should. Maybe humans aren't the only intelligent species on the planet. basically the message i got..

More Than Honey

Decent. basically the same thoughts as what I wrote above

Watched 2 climbing docs recently, Touching the Void, and The Sharp Edge.

Touching the Void is about a climbing expedition these two guys took in 1985 as a first ascent of a mountain in Peru and the aftermath after one of them broke their leg. I thought it was okay.

The Sharp Edge I found more interesting, it covered a bunch of different climbing techniques and people who do them in some crazy places.

I would probably skip both given the number of exceptional documentaries out there, but maybe if you're into a climbing a little bit or want to see a somewhat harrowing tale of what happens when things go wrong you'd like them more.

I think that second one is called The Sharp End. I find rock climbing really interesting even though I suck at it and haven't done it for years so will try to give this one a watch.

Watched Stolen Seas the other night on netflix. It's about Somalian pirates. The documentary does a great job of explaining the economic motivations behind modern-day piracy, and demonstrates that they aren't necessarily the villains that Western media makes them out to be.

About 25 minutes in, pretty good and it looks like it's only going to get better.

Saw another climbing doc called First Ascent. It covered a couple of different types of climbing similarly to the Sharp End, but was a bit unfocused, particularly one chunk of the movie seemed a bit non-sequitur.

It was like 90% dramatizations/reenactment and 10% 3 guys just talking in separate places. The story was cool, but very drawn out. I thought it was fine, but definitely not great and is probably better as a book.

Confirmed the book is better but I thought the movie was still pretty good and well shot.

Finished Jadorowsky's Dune, that's gonna be one of my favs for 2013. Must watch for any fans of sci-fi, cinema in general, and artistic endeavours. I wonder what it would have been like to have had that movie made, or to make it now...
