Hope I don't sound like Bill Clinton regarding the definition of the word "is" but what do you mean by "see" (i.e., do you need a B&M theater to "see" it as opposed to a DVD rental)? Anyway it's a great documentary and available right now on Netflix "Watch instantly" or as a DVD.

I just got home and a link to this post was at the top of my email. Tonight I had to sort out some personal issues so went out at a "Cheers" type bar (except I was the stranger) to do some thinking over a cocktail. I'm not a good thinker at home; maybe it's because my computer is always staring me in the face and I worry I could be earning much needed income with online poker.

At the bar sat next to this extremely friendly talkative retired Marine DI (he knows the DI from Full Metal Jacket) from Newark and somehow the conversation drifted towards this film. Hope I don't sound (write?) drunk

Cliff notes it get it from Netflix and don't Google the history of the aftermath first.

Hoop Dreams. Probably the best documentary of the 1990s. It is an unbelievably good film.

Part of Hoop Dreams was filmed in my hometown.

I'm calling it now after seeing the world premiere today at SXSW:

War Don Don will at will be nominated for, if not win, best feature length documentary at next year's Academy Awards. Holy crap, it was so good. Their access to top-level RUF leaders, the ICC, the prosecutors, and defense counsel, as well as regular Sierra Leoneians was incredible. It was so incredibly well-balanced that you were really left to make up your own mind about everything with the facts just laid out for you.

I'm sure it's been stated in here before, but Gangland is an awesome series.

i'm a self-professed gang buff, and i thought gangland was cheese. the production style is annoying at best, feels like a cops episode or something. i admit i enjoyed the first couple, where they were profiling the "real" gangs (e.g. ms13, nortenos, surenos, crips, bloods, aryans), but the rest of them are super repetitive and focus on unheard-of gangs. they should have stopped after the first "season". just my imo though.

i much prefer the style of ross kemp on gangs, and there's a brilliant documentary called "18 with a bullet" (or 'eighteen') produced by the BBC that's top shelf.

^^^^Sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out

The sundance channel had a nice block of documentaries this morning. I saw capturing the friedmans for the first time in like 5 years. Forgot how amazing and powerful it was.

Right after that they had "Until the light takes us". It's all about the norwegian black metal scene of the late eighties/early nineties. Basically covering the origin of the music and what led to the church burnings and murders of its most prominant members. Very interesting documentary.

One of my favorites that I just remembered. Really, just amazing.
"The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On"/"Yuki Yukite Shingun", 1987

I don't want to spoil it. If you can handle subtitles, it is well worth it. Don't even read the synopsis I linked to, just get it since that could somewhat ruin it. It starts as a comedy almost, it ends quite differently. If I remember it right, it involves some crazy old guy with ridiculous war stories, a car, a loudspeaker, and some forced entries into ex-commanders' houses. Police, of course, as well.

One of the best moments in cinema (ime) in there if you really go along for the ride.

It's based around the old vet, whom you're not really sure is fictional or not. Could be a weird Japanese-style mockumentary, who knows? Well, you'll figure it out once you watch it.

Also, anyone who liked Baraka/Qatsis, "Chronos" is worth checking out. It's a lot spacier (was made for a planetarium or something, I think) and shorter, but enjoyable if that's your style. Made by Ron Fricke. Sort of like the beginning of Koyaanisqatsi or the ending of Baraka made into a 45-min film.

It's an incredible story about so many things but survival in particular.
Your's is the only post. Saw this last night and it was simply amazing; well beyond the typical "feel good" documentary on survival. Had more of a "film" look and the intermingling of modern filming with old footage (the expedtition was in 1914 so there were moving pictures and film from the original expedition) was done extremely well.

This is the sort of DVD where you want to watch the extra features.

The book was written by wrtten by Caroline Alexander, who also wrote The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty. I read that a few years ago and enjoyed it; it gives a different and interesting take on Captain Bligh.

I agree. Interesting concept, but watching them in succession was so boring. Too many recaps and nothing interesting happens to these people. I gave up after 21 Up because I couldn't put myself through more of it.

Dream Deceivers is about two Judas Priest fans that tried to kill themselves. One succeeded, the other blew off half his face and lived. The survivor sued Judas Priest for influencing him to attempt suicide. The documentary follows the trial and slowly reveals the truth about the victim's family life.

Warning: don't watch if you are bothered by seeing a guy with a mangled face.

Watch it here:

Harmony Korine: I used to sneak into the NYU library and they had a copy of it and I would watch it. It gave me the strangest feeling. Just the images of those two kids listening to Stormtroopers of Death, driving around Reno deserts drinking Miller-Lite. ****ing blowing their brains out, listening to Judas Priest backwards. And that guy being interviewed with this face that's completely blown off... It was so eerie."
