"The Origin of AIDS" is very good/interesting. It's only a theory as to where AIDS started, but seems to be very likely.

The True Story of Killing Pablo

Not to be confused with the upcoming film, this documentary is truly fascinating.

A Jail in Colombia -

A look inside the La Modelo prison in Bogota. Colombia. Called a "model" prison by Colombia officials the prison in reality is controlled more by the prisoners than the guards. With 5000 prisoners for 2400 spots, and not more than 150 security guards assigned to the prison. The prison is awash in violence, and drugs. Last year, 162 prisoners were killed there. The prison is controlled by three criminal groups: members of the guerrilla movement, paramilitary forces, and cocaine traffickers. They have broken the prison up into three different territories and each group has it's own security forces, defending it's own territory.

This was incredible and actually caused the prison to be closed by President Uribe.

Jail Documetaries - There seems to be one or more of these on every night and I never get tired of watching them.
Hour long documentaries of different prisons in the US.

Nominated for an Oscar in 2006, Street Fight is one of the most gripping political documentaries I have ever seen. It tells the story of a young, black, Rhodes Scholar, Cory Booker, challenging longtime Newark, NJ mayor Sharpe James in 2002.

This is old-time machine politics at its best/worst. If you are interested in politics, you should check it out. It was just released on DVD and is available on netflix.

Second this one. I used to live in Newark and still follow the politics and, while some of the stuff in this movie may seem over the top, it's absolutely true.

Interesting fact: until Cory Booker, every Newark mayor streching back to 1962 has been indicted on federal corruption charges.

Great film.

War Photographer - Saw someone recommend this earlier I strongly disliked this. Thought it was a great topic and was psyched to see it but it was so slow moving, so many images. It was an artsy, images and few words type deal, not particularly well done. Also thought the famous amazing war photographer was a bit of a dummy, what he said given what he has done was so uninteresting.

No end in site - best movie i've seen on iraq, highly recommend.

The Corporation is one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. It's just anti-capitalist fluff. A bunch of random scary music, qoutes taken out of context, and poorly constructed arguments about why every corporation is evil. In almost every example they give, you can make a much better case for placing the blame on fascist/corporatist governments than the corporations they're trying to vilify.

The qoute from Michael Moore at the very end is just priceless for it's hilarious logical fallacies and contradictions.
Care to expand on this in any way? I just don't see it at all. How do you place the blame on government for the monsanto example?

Also, what fascist government are you trying to place the blame on? The US government?

Google video is not co-operating at this moment but I don't see the logical fallacies or contradictions of micheal moore's statement at the end. Care to explain it to me?
I'd be happy to explain my thoughts on this, but it would likely cause a major thread hijack. Let's start a new thread or PM.
start a thread instead of PMs if you don't mind, could be an interesting discussion. i haven't watched the film but i was thinking about it,i'm sure a thread about it would be worth reading if i did.

Gladiator Days: Anatomy of a Prison Murder

This acclaimed, gritty documentary examines the culture of violence in prisons, focusing on the brutal murder of inmate Lonnie Blackmon. At a Utah State Prison, white supremacist convict Troy Kell was captured on the prison security camera in the act of the murder. Interviews with Kell himself, his accomplice, his prosecutor, and the victim's brother reveal the details and aftermath of this vicious case. Kell's criminal history is also explored through interviews from his involvement in a 1986 murder up until his status on death row.

It was on youtube a couple weeks ago but the acount that had it was banned here is the trailer Trailer

just watched "Into the Void" and it was quite good although not a true documentary. It is made up of interviews that serve as narration for re-enactments. The movie is about two young climbers who got themselves in a heap of trouble in the Andes in 1985. The re-enactments are very high quality and the survival story is intense.

8. Conspiracy Of Silence - Pedophile Ring In Washington DC

This was the biggest scandal in the history of the U.S.A history. The story received some newspaper coverage but there was a TV News Media blackout on the subject. For this reason, most Americans have never heard of it. Former republican Senator John Decamp was involved in the production a documentary called "Conspiracy of Silence" it was to air May 3, 1994 on the Discovery Channel. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired. Almost immediately, the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who had ordered all copies destroyed. A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired F.B.I. chief, Ted L. Gunderson.

Roving Mars: A fascinating documentary about the men behind the two little remote operated vehicles who are roving Mars as we speak.

A Jail in Columbia: It have already been mentioned, but it is certainly worth a look.

Ramsay's Boiling Point: A scary glimpse into the high society of master chefs. It is an old documentary in which we follow master chef Gordon Ramsay in his quest to make his very own restaurant a success. But it turns out that the road to success is paved with sudden outbursts of rage, abuse of staff and an almost obsessive attention to detail.

I really liked Jump! I saw it at the Chicago Film Fest a few weeks ago. It is doc about competitive jump rope. I never knew there was such a thing but it the film turned out to be really interesting and a lot of fun.

Another doc I really like "The Sky Above, the Mud Below." It is an Oscar winner in ’62 for best documentary feature. French film that is available in English but there is not really much dialog, mostly voice over. It is about a few guys who visit tribes of real headhunters and cannibals in New Guinea. It could not be made today because these tribes no longer exist.

One again and episode of American Experience (PBS) has had a deep impact on me. I'm pretty sure this is still my favorite show.

This one was on Jonestown. I knew the rough details but that's about it. I was crying at the end. The incredible thing is they have the whole thing on audio tape, and a lot of it on video. Right up to the end. This should be required viewing for anyone who's ever considered getting involved with a cult.

The most disturbing part for me was hearing him rationalize while trying to convince everyone to drink the kool-aid. It's not often you have audio tape from right in the middle of a crime scene like that. 5 or 6 people got away, 909 died at the compound, some more including a US Senator were shot at the airstrip. Very heart-wrenching and horrifying. I wouldn't watch it if you're already feeling down.

Devil's Playground is a 2002 documentary film by Lucy Walker about the alleged Amish rite of passage called Rumspringa. The film follows Amish teenagers in LaGrange County, Indiana who enter the "English World" to decide whether they will be baptised as adults in the Amish community. They deal with problems in the outside world, which the Amish refer to as "the Devil's Playground," that do not exist in their home communities, including alcohol and drugs.

[edit] Synopsis

According to the film, at the age of 16, Amish youth are allowed to depart from many of the Amish rules and for the first time in their lives, though the scholarship on the subject does not support this view of a normative rumspringa. The young people sample life outside of the Amish community. Many drive cars, get jobs, have romantic and sexual relationships, and most experiment with smoking, partying, alcohol, and drugs.

One Amish youth that the film follows, Faron – a preacher's son – even turns to drug dealing to satisfy his habit. Faron is eventually apprehended by the authorities and aids them in arresting another dealer. The movie continues as each subject faces a variety of challenges and pressures from both the "English World" and the "Amish World" of their families. Some return to their families, others do not. Some are baptized but later leave the Amish church, resulting in their families' shunning them.

According to the documentary, after the period of Rumspringa, 90% of the youth decide to rejoin the church.

This was a GREAT documentary the main characyer Faron really draws you in this is a MUST watch!!

Wow. I watched this on your reccomendation and found it fascinating.

For those that don't know, this is about people who are in love with realistic sex dolls. Absolutely unbelievable. Some of the most memorable lines:

"Chi-Chi spends most of her time in here."
"I know we're going to miss each other so much."
"The thing I like is that I know we're always going to be there for each other."

At any rate, definately a little disturbing but worth the time if you're bored.
