Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
So first off i hope this is the right forum.
I am an avid disc golfer and have been for around 2 years now. I started playing in Minnesota where i found most courses to be quite easy save maybe 2. My next Frolf adventure took me to college in montana. The holes here are either long, filled with trees or up a mountain, some are all three. I have also played courses in washington and california which were excellent.
I prefer the groove for flicking(forehanding)

and the wraith for backhanding

id like to hear others experiences playing places. and if you have any questions feel free to ask and ill do my best to answer.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
no pics of your putter or approach shot disc?
I used to play weekly, but for me it was always an excuse to go walk around and maybe drink beer with friends. sometimes to see different places i wouldn't go to otherwise.
best course i've ever played was in French Creek State Park, PA about 15 years ago. it was in the woods and had a few holes where the drive was over water. I've only played 25 courses or so, but i always enjoyed that course.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
I used to play at Oak Grove park near Pasadena, CA. Great course.
"Oak Grove Disc Golf Course is world renowned for
being the First Permanent Disc Golf Course in the World."

Also played a few times at a very tough course in Sylmar, CA.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
::cringes at the term 'frolf':: disc golf, please
I've been playing for 14 years, and besides poker, there's nothing i've been doing as long that i suck at quite as much. still, i love the hell out of it. i grew up in NC playing a ton on this great wooded course near my high school. even aced a 175 foot S-curve through a tight alley of trees; one of my more glorious sporting feats (celebrations included shotgunning a beer, and excessive high-fiving/"whooping it up"). it's a beautiful sport, like ball golf, with difficult shots, tough decisions, and endless fine-tuning of technique and equipment.
now i live out in Colorado and love playing at the 4 or 5 courses within 10 miles of my house. if you haven't played, i suggest getting into it. it's fun as hell, free, and great for nice warm days with cold beers and a sneaky joint (if that's your thing).
I currently use:
Innova Champion Orc
Roc mid-range
Original Aviar putter

I'm having a hard time visualizing this. I know golf discs fly quite a bit differently than ultimate discs, but the only way I can think of to get an ultimate disc to fly like that is with one of the upside down throws. A 60 yard helixed hammer through trees for a hole in one does sound pretty sick.
I've never played on a real course or touched a golf disc, but in college we'd play an object course on campus pretty frequently. The principal downer to this was that several of the holes featured parking lots as the major hazard, so getting the round done before security caught up to you was occasionally a problem. I'd love to try the real thing sometime.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
Lightning Upshot for putting.
Roc in KC plastic for mid range. I've had this for years and it is broken in quite nicely.
Discraft XS in a bunch of different plastic for driving, but I'm thinking of dropping it for something better.
Then I've got a bunch of other discs in my bag that I've either found and liked or something that I bought and didn't work out well enough.
There are some nice courses around Chicago depending upon how far you want to drive. I've played a few courses that were just awful and a bunch that are mediocre. For a couple years now I've wanted to go on an extended road trip alternating between disc golf and live pokers.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
gumpzilla: disc golf discs are made to fly in specific flight patterns according to their type (driver, mid-range, putter, roller, etc). my driver will fly out from right to left, and then slowly curve back to the right. some discs do the opposite, some will just cut right or just cut left, etc. pretty amazing technology these days, with the top pros consistently driving 400ft+

I have to agree. That's a word I've never used.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
No pics of putter because i dont use one. im much more comfortable turbo putting(thumb is on the middle of the bottom of the disc and the fingerswrap around it)
I live in Montana now and the commonly accepted term is FOLF. wtf? i agree disc golf is proper but i have a hard time convincing other people to call it that over frolf.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
Gump,
A disc golf disc typically breaks very hard in the opposite direction of the spin as it loses spin, unlike an ultimate disc which breaks in the same direction (e.g., a right-handed backhand with a disc golf disc will break left at the end of its flight). A good disc golf throw usually flies in some kind of an S pattern.
The course in Balboa Park is awesome.
The Beast and the Monarch are my go-to drivers, as I'm still taming my "tail-skate" (even after playing for several years ). The only other disc I use is my putter (Soft Magnet). I never quite understood those dudes with 100's of discs in their bags, but I guess it's the same as taking any hobby to the extreme.

I understand it to a point. I'll carry around 8 with me in my small bag. I feel like a backpack or little rolling cart would be too much of a hassle and ruin lots of the fun.
Couple drivers, either for different ranges, flight characteristics (straight, hyzer, anhyzer), in case you lose one, backhand/forehand and dealing with a front or tail wind. Disc(s) for hammer throws. Midrange discs (straight, hyzer, anhyzer, wind). A roller. Putter. Maybe different colors to match your outfit?
Edit: Oh yeah, different weights and plastics.

ive never shot a hole in one
i am pretty decent but never play too seriously. and i like to play with just one disc, sometimes a putter too tho. have pretty good control and distance with forehand and backhand. almost always drive sidearm

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
I have made the greatest disc golf shot of all time. Impossible shot, long as ****, and through a ton of trees.
I also will only use disc approved by 12 time champion ken climo.

Re: Disc Golf/Frolf!!!
Glad to see several people saying they use beasts. definately a great disc for starters due to its slightly above average flight distance but also being one of the straightest flying discs forehand or backhand. I got my first hole in one with my govove on a 240 foot hole out in the open. my only other one was with a beast on a 400 foot hole in the middle of the woods(flew in the most beautiful S i have ever seen dodging every tree by inches and then a chang sound)
also the holes are usually referred to as baskets

and landing it on the very top does not count

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km5z15fxos4
there is an annual disclands comp or something out there, pros come in and do retarded stuff. i guess it's a lot like watching pros play on your regular course. everything is longer, more precise and effortless lol.
disc golf is a great reason to walk around and drink beers and bs w/ friends at minimal cost
