Re: comics thread
I bought Kingdom Come, Hedge Knight's and Dark Phoenix Saga yesterday. I read halfway through Dark Phoenix Saga, I am very excited about this one.
I was reading Animal Man by Grant Morrison, but I think I won't continue with it, I'd rather read other stuff. I'll go ahead and check out his "The Invisibles" before I decide whether I go on with Animal Man or not.

Re: comics thread
Finish Animal Man first. It was originally supposed to be a six issue mini-series show the character's new status post crisis, so the first trade paperback is pretty boring but **** kicks off in a major way in the second and there is some truly insane crap happening in the third. If you don't like Animal Man, it is very doubtful you will like The Invisibles.

Re: comics thread
Ordered Runaways and Fables TPBs from Amazon based on this thread. Only thru 2 issues of Fables and can already tell I love it so I put in another order for 5 more TPBs. Runaways is ok, but the TPB with 6 issues took virtually no time to read, really not much content there. Not sure if I'll continue with this one or not. Also got Batman Arkham and am excited to start that.

Re: comics thread
Finished reading "Dark Phoenix Saga" it was awesome (although the last two issues weren't as cool as the first 7). I thought the comic were fantastic. Besides having the storyline with Jean Grey going Dark Phoenix it also introduces Emma Frost, Kitty Pride and the Hellfire club. Pretty cool stuff.
Right now I am reading "Kingdom Come". The first chapter was very cool.

It's Battlestar Galactica with capes. Not really expecting much beyond the usual mega-crossover pointless deaths and retcons.

Re: comics thread
I just read "Kingdom Come", it was awesome. I specially liked the artwork by Alex Ross. Wow, that guy is really good. The comic felt like an epic and it worked. I liked the look of Superman with the black chest. It was a very interesting comic.
I also read "Serenity: Better Days". This wasn't good. I wouldn't recommend it even if you're a Firefly fan.
I am now reading "Top Ten" and "Fables". The first issues of each were cool.

If someone already mentioned this, I missed it:
A must-read if you're into 20th century pop culture. Ellis' blog is worth a read too.

Re: comics thread
Have any of you subscribed to the Marvel Digital comics? I used to collect comics 20 years ago (Frank Miller and Alan Moore are by far my favorites), and want to get back into them, but at $3 a pop for a normal comic, it seems like the digital comics would be a good way to get back into them?

Re: comics thread
I went to a talk by Neil Gaiman yesterday, it was called the Julius Schwartz lecture.
Here are my thoughts on it:
The lecture was sold out (1200 people) and it consisted of a 15 minute talk on Julius Schwartz by an MIT faculty and then Neil Gaiman took the stage and gave a 50 minute speech. It was very good, it was about genre. He said genre was something where the story is about leading to certain things and if you take them out people feel cheated. He made the analogy in similarities between hardcore porn and musicals. It was quite funny. His speech also talked about a recent trip to China where he was impressed by the size of a sci-fi/fantasy Con considering sci-fi used to be "illegal" (Mao era). Gaiman asked about it to one of the organizers and what he answered was: (I paraphrase but put in quotes just because I can) "For centuries, China has been very good at building stuff other people create, but not very good at creating. We realized that the leaders of many creative endeavours in America where fans of science fiction and fantasy, so we started to embrace it." I thought that was very interesting.
After Gaiman's speech there was a Q&A session with the host (faculty from MIT) and the session was very interesting. It went on for 80 minutes and I wasn't tired of listening it at all. During this I decided that I should try to read some of Gaiman's children's books. He had some interesting points about it. After that they opened the floor and answered questions from the public for about 15 minutes.
It was very fun and I'm glad I went to see him.

Re: comics thread
I just read the first two trades of the Buffy Season 8 series. It's better than I expected, and Whedon does a good job of transitioning the plot from tv to comics, i.e. doing huge fights and creatures that his special effects could never achieve, balancing the arcs differently, etc. My only complaint is that it's almost too much like X-Men at times, especially the threat they are facing - though there's probably some misdirection going on. Def recommended for Buffy fans.
