Re: comics thread

I just read Constantine HellBlazer: All His Engines. It was very good. It seems like the HellBlazer series might be a fun one to go through as it has had many famous writers write for it (Ennis, Ellis, Morrison, Moore). The artwork by Manco was pretty cool as it definitely makes you feel the darkness of the story.
I remember watching the movie "Constantine" but I don't remember much of it, so I guess it wasn't good, but after reading this comic it made me want to watch it again.

Re: comics thread

I finished reading Y: The Last Man this weekend and it was excellent. I am almost done with the trades that have been published for Ex Machina and it is my favorite series right now.
I am also in the middle of reading "The Filth" by Grant Morrison. I have read the first four issues (the book has 13 issues) and it is extremely weird.
After I finish The Filth I am planning on reading Fables.

Don't worry, The Filth gets a lot weirder.

Re: comics thread

Has anyone read "Age of Bronze" by Eric Shanower? It's a comic book about the Trojan War. It was profiled on Salon.com, or something like that, and it looked interesting. I'm a nerd who used to be into Greek mythology a lot so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it.

Re: comics thread

Also forgot to mention one comic as I was browsing mine today:

Garth Ennis fans should enjoy this one. Its a post-apoc story that involves a super killer wandering the Earth after the sun kills nearly everybody. Be sure to pick up Just a Pilgrim: Garden of Eden as well. A fun violent story Garth Ennis style:

Re: comics thread

ya **** the filth was weird as hell... didnt even finish it (plan to in a while). couldnt decide whether all the mind**** stuff was justified or if he just wanted to be super pretentious and arty. all the silly disclaimers on the cover and everything else kinda made me think that is indeed the case so i got bored with it.

those last two sound like hot recommendations orange. orange, rempel, thanks a lot for contributing.

Re: comics thread

This is another autobiographical graphic novel in the vein of Persepolis and Epileptic. Here's the blurb from wiki:
"Fun Home (subtitled A Family Tragicomic) is a graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, author of the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. It chronicles the author's childhood and youth in rural Pennsylvania, USA, focusing on her complex relationship with her father. The book addresses themes of sexual orientation, gender roles, suicide and the role of literature in understanding oneself and one's family. Writing and illustrating Fun Home took seven years, in part because of Bechdel's laborious artistic process, which includes photographing herself in poses for each human figure.[1][2][3][4]

Fun Home has been both a popular and critical success, and spent two weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list.[5][6] In The New York Times Sunday Book Review, Sean Wilsey called it "a pioneering work, pushing two genres (comics and memoir) in multiple new directions."[7] Several publications named Fun Home as one of the best books of 2006; it was also nominated for several awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award and three Eisner Awards (one of which it won).[8][9] A French translation of Fun Home was serialized in the newspaper Libération; the book was an official selection of the Angoulême International Comics Festival and has been the subject of an academic conference in France.[10][11][12]"

Re: comics thread

FROM HELL may put you off first, given it's size and the fact that it's in black and white with a fairly different art style then what you may be used to, but it is SO ****ING WORTH IT.

Re: comics thread

Rempel, did you read the appendices for From Hell? It slowed me down and made me put it down for a while. I think I will skip the appendices in the next volumes (so far have only read the first two volumes).

Re: comics thread

Yeah but I waited until the end and also have a couple copies so I could read the appendix in one and the actual comic in the other.

Re: comics thread

Anyone here reading "Secret Invasion" the big Marvel thing this year? I read the first issue and it was okay. Apparently Bendis has been planning this "invasion" for several years and has been planting hints in things he has written for Marvel.
Also, anyone following the events of the New York Comic Con?
By the way, for the New Englanders, Neil Gaiman is going to give a talk at MIT on May 23rd, looks cool.

Re: comics thread

Good news! Sat May 3rd is Free Comic Book Day, in which comic retailers can get cheap and free comics to give from most comics companies to give away as a free promotional tool.

One of the giveaways is All-Star Superman #1, so if you are at all interested head down to your local comic shop at some point during the day and check it out.
