Re: Coffee Addicts Thread

I've been looking into solutions for foaming milk without having a steamer. I was reading amazon reviews of the Aerolatte, where one reviewer recommended pouring cold milk into a small french press and rapidly moving the plunger up and down to foam the milk.

It works amazingly well. I just tried foaming some skim chocolate milk, pumped the press for about 15s, then put it in the microwave for 75s and ended up with beautiful stable foam.

Sir, you have changed my life. Gone is the anguish. Gone the black hatred my forefathers bequeathed me. There will be peace between our peoples.

Not but seriously that's a cool trick and it worked for me and I'm happy, so thanks.

Re: Coffee Addicts Thread

BTW, I was in nashville yesteraday and finally got to try the Clover at the starbucks out in Belle Meade.

Verdict: the coffee was good, but I'm not sure how much of that was due to the fact that I got "reserve" coffee (indonesia java blue and honduras something something) and how much of it was a result of the machine.

The "coffee master" at the store was very excited to explain the machine to me. It seems like an aeropress with a motor and precision temperature control. Also apparently each coffee blend has its own temperature setting and ratio of water to grinds. They punch in the type of coffee into the machine and it does the rest.

The belle meade store is very nice. It's in an old, ****ty looking strip mall but it's a big store and they have a LOT of business.

A friend of mine had some Cloverfied Starbucks in New York and she said it wasn't great, really just tasted like Starbucks. I chalk this up to Starbucks beans.

When I have something good like Counter Culture beans in Clover vs drip, I can definitely tell the difference.

well what did she have? I mean, it IS starbucks, what was she expecting? A diet coke? Honestly I am sure a LOT of people can't tell the difference because they simply don't care about the type of things that are different. So not knowing your friend at all, this statement is not very useful.

I'm not sure how you would be able to tell the difference with designer brand beans but not starbucks beans. Seems like if you're getting snooty it would be easier to tell the difference with inferior beans.

Is a french press better than a brewing basket?

Re: Coffee Addicts Thread

Bump because I got a really nice burr grinder for $1.50 at a garage sale yesterday! (story would be better if I had paid $3.50, huh?)

Does anyone know exactly what cafe con leche, which was soooo good in Costa Rica, consists of? Is it just strong coffee with steamed milk or is it espresso with steamed milk or something totally different?

I've never tried that filter but as long as it doesn't impart flavor into your brew then I would say that it's better. Some people like the French Press because it's probably the most "pure" way to drink coffee but it's messy to clean up and gets grounds in your coffee, which I hate!

Make sure you 1) Stir just before pressing and 2) Let the grounds settle before pouring (30 seconds or so, factor it into the brewing time). It made a significant difference for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try

Re: Coffee Addicts Thread

so while i agree the bulletproof coffee guy seems whacky and sales heavy i admit to not only having tried coffee this way, but being a convert.

i dont buy his beans because basically i dont buy him but i generally try to eat in a 'paleo' fashion these days so i was all for getting more grass fed butter in my diet (plus its cheap, i generally have a healthy 600 calorie coffee and it costs me....)

$19 for a pound of fresh roasted La Minita coffee from a local roaster. I probably get 10+ servings of the coffee this way.

$3(?) for a stick of unsalted kerrygold...this is generally enough for 4 cups of coffee i suppose.

.75 cents for a small bar of trader joes dark chocolate. this is optional but i like my coffee sweet and dark chocolate beat out stevia. ill deal with the sugar.

i also add two teaspoons of coconut oil, i guess that equates to like .25 cents?

we are talking an average of anywhere between $3-$4 for not only a really high end cup of coffee but also ~600 good calories. a Big Mac costs roughly the same but with low quality food. its pretty damn hard to get in 600 good calories for that price.

not to mention i think it tastes freaking awesome, i dont get hungry for 4-6 hours and yes i do feel pretty sharp. give it a go yo

i use an aeropress fwiw
