Define "get anything going".

Become developed, become safe to walk to the El stops, not be utterly terrifying to live... You know, that sorta thing.

A friend of mine who lives there said it was pretty awful. He was at a 7/11 there and witnessed the cashier get robbed at gunpoint. He posts on FB about how he can't wait to get out of there. Just one person but it doesn't sound like its any place you'd want to live if you can afford better.

Nah, wasn't considering it, but it had (has?) been for some time one of those neighborhoods that might be just on the cusp of getting revitalized but it can never quite get momentum going. I think every city has one of these sorts of neighborhoods.

Rogers Park is far from terrifying in some spots, shady in others. There used to be a shelter pickup-dropoff up here that would infect the beach with crackheads after 9pm; that stopped in around 2010.

I just bought up here because I wanted a 3rd bedroom, outdoor space, non-touristy beach access, and a garage. The Metra and Red Line are maybe an 8-minute walk apart, grocery shopping is abundant, and bars are neighborhood instead of touristy.

It's my 3rd time living up here. 1st time was in college in a sketchy part, 2nd time was a condo on Sheridan from 2005-09 that I loved. Now, being slightly west of the Metra here is exactly what I want. Everyone has outdoor space, half the block leaves their grills and patio furniture out without problems, the Metra is less than a 5-minute walk, Red Line less than 15, I'm between the Clark and Western buses. One of my favorite pizza places is up here, one of my favorite BBQ joints, walking distance from a relatively decent golf course, I love Indian food, and I don't wanna trap my 4-burner grill on a fire escape to have my guests eat indoors on a nice day but still have the space indoors for 4-season entertaining.

I love the slightly south-of South Loop and can understand why you do. The town homes there probably would have been something to chase if my wife didn't need North Shore Metra access. In Rogers Park, on Sheridan or east of it is nice, as well as west of Clark and south of Touhy. The in-between isn't so much unsafe, IMO, as I'd say still a mixture of rehabbed and unkept.

Saying that south of Addison is pretty much Chicago is pretty closed-off thinking, but can't complain too much because that mindset keeps neighborhoods I like from turning into the touristy Lincoln Park/Lakeview/Bucktown I generally abhor. Lincoln Square, Andersonville, North Center, Ravenswood, and Rogers Park are great, IMO. I don't wanna be an earshot of Moe's Cantina and the like.

Yeah, I've been admittedly a bit hyperbolic in some of my assessments...my MIL's ex has lived in Rogers Park his whole life, and hasn't had problem that I'm aware of. Proximity to Loyola isn't bad. I'm more of a south side guy (having lived in Hyde Park), and wife is north side (Boys Town). She actually mentioned Uptown/Andersonville as early options, and my response was "FFFNNNNOOOOOO," prematurely of course. I do dig some of the south loop town homes, but they're probably a little on the pricey side atm. Outdoor space is one of the tradeoffs we'll probably live with for the time being.

Funny that...Lollapalooza t shirts for 2013 are the exact same prices they were in 1993. Go figure.

Awesome news for Chicago foodies: Mexique's chef/owner Carlos Gaytan is going to be on this season of Top Chef (New Orleans). Season starts Oct. 2. Also, a guy from Slurping Turtle will be on it, but I'm not familiar with him nor have I been to ST. I've been to Mexique multiple times and consider it one of my favorite places in the city.

Structure, what part of the city are you looking at?

Uptown, North Center, Lincoln Square, and Ravenswood are littered with great Thai places.

Shot in the dark, but I'm looking for a room or studio until the end of November or December. Not much luck on Craigslist or roomster.

Looking mostly in the Logan square area, would like to keep rent under $800/mo. If anybody knows someone or is someone with a spot to fill, shoot me a pm.

Thanks

Dharma Garden is easily the best Thai in the city.

I find this incredibly unlikely, but would love to hear why you think so and what is special about the place.

went to Parson's Chicken and Fish the other night in Logan square . It's basically Big Star with fried chicken (and some cheaper drink options). The whole atmosphere is pretty fantastic, and cute hipsterish waitresses. met the manager who was super cool and gave us free beer and shots.

It was a Tuesday and they had a few specials (my buddy especially enjoyed the $1 Strohs beer). definitely gonna go back

Is anyone interested in going to Next Restaurant: Bocuse D'or? I have a 4-top and so far only have 1 friend going in addition to myself. I am waiting to hear from a couple other friends, but will most likely have at least 1 spot free.

Fri Nov 29, around $250/person w/ water, can upgrade to drink pairings there and pay there
