What are people's thoughts on sour stouts? I've only had a few but I've enjoyed them quite a bit and was wondering if there were any I others I should keep an eye out for. I've had a couple from the Bruery, Tart of Darkness and one of the Melanges. Currently, Down the Road has a chocolate cranberry stout at their tap room (Deepdweller) that I really liked when I was there last weekend.

I am just getting into home brewing, and was wondering - I couldn't find a home brewing thread around here, are none of you guys brewing yourself? Hard to imagine none of 2+2 is, but I didn't find one in neither EDF nor in OOT.
There is a home brewing thread in The Lounge, don't think it is active anymore

Who says NE gets to own hazy citrahop IPA's.

Come out to the PNW and you can try a few hundred different ones.

Ah okay, thanks! I didn't find it in Tapatalk. I looked in the Lounge tho, so I guess you're right, it doesn't seem to be active anymore. I'll go search it

Reno: I’ve enjoyed the sour stouts I’ve had. Don’t really see that many, though. I’ve had tart of darkness, nightmare on Brett, and some from rare barrel. That’s about it. Not sure what the melange blends are, maybe some have some sour stout in them. Speaking of...

Spider: had this one?

Goofy: do you like Bruery white chocolate? The bottle description sounded good, but the longer description on BA didn’t sound too great to me. I figure you have an opinion on it.

I do, though it's been awhile since I've had it (and then I think the recipe changed a little between 2016 and 2017, it lost about 1.3% abv between those batches). They did a recent variation, White Chocolate with Cherries, which is pretty good, and I just got some bottles of White Chocolate Chunk (WC with macadamia nuts) delivered this week that I'm excited about but I've been too sick to open one yet.

However, the description on BA is accurate:

Quote:
The primary component of our "White Oak" ale is a 100% barrel aged wheat wine that we affectionately refer to as "White Oak Sap." Essentially a "summer" barley-wine style ale, but made with a wheat heavy grain base, White Oak Sap is aged in used bourbon barrels for nearly a year and comes out rich in flavors of coconut, honey, caramel and vanilla. To compliment the already rich flavors of the beer, we've added cacao nibs and vanilla beans to give this beer the delicate flavor of white chocolate...hence the name.
...so if that doesn't sound like something that appeals to you then you can prob skip it.

Saw this one today in my local bottle shop and was intrigued, but they were charging $40 and I could not pull the trigger on it. I'll keep an eye out for it at a couple of other nearby places that consistently charge less

I've seen the Stout Rullquin on shelves but have never been tempted to try it. I assume I wouldn't like it, but I'm not really sure I'm so confident, given that I love Tilquin so much.

Also, tonight I tried Stone Ripper pale ale for the first time. I thought it was a pretty good beer if you're having several and don't want to get crazy drunk (it's only 5.7%).

I had the stout rullquin and I really liked it. I’m not sure it was $30 good but it was delicious.

Next up in the non-stout division at home is Fire Skulls & Money. Really excited to be getting more TG stuff in Chicago.
Death by Coconut -

I liked this a lot more than Victory at Sea coconut. Slightly more body, better smell, and I liked the flavor more. I thought VaS coconut had some like, sourness? that I didn't like. DbC had a longer dark chocolate/astringent finish that kind of reminds me of not great office coffee. So not entirely bad and not entirely good. I enjoyed the carbonation of this more as well.

I couldn't find Bourbon Paradise, but actually picked up Paradise the other night and forgot to put in my list. The quest continues.

The perks of living in Michigan.

Had this tonight. Probably one the better American Saison I’ve had but my experience is really limited. Refreshing, well done but nothing regally going on. I need more orange flavor more tart or something.

Hey guys, long time, no see.

Stopped posting because my drinking got out of control. It has been a while and I feel like that's not the case anymore. Anyway, here's some beer reviews:

Modern Times Fraxos- About a week old. A hazy IPA sold in stores. I'm usually disappointed when I see a the words "Hazy IPA" and on a can or bottle sitting on a shelf. Only Modern Times seems to be able to deliver on what you'd expect and this hazy iteration is a success. Pours quite pale but still hazy. Strong pineapple scent with zesty grapefruit flavor. Good mouthfeel but doesn't hit that sweetness threshhold emblematic of most hazys. Still a pretty solid showing.

Ballast Point Aloha Sculpin: Ten days old. Pours disturbingly copper and with a half-hearted haziness. Weak hoppy scent. Another failure like Sierra Nevada or New Belgium right? BUT the creamy mouthfeel is there along with the fruity zestiness. Malty flavors intrude on the finish. This beer leans more towards hazy and will be enjoyable unless you're some kind of hazy purist.

Stone IRS 2018: Typical look of an imperial stout. Typical imperial stout taste with iron/metallic notes and some cardboard. Not hard to find a more worthwhile equivalent.

Perennial Abraxas: The best non-BA imperial stout? Yes. Worth the $20 per bomber? Get a solid BA imperial stout.

That's all for now!

Went to a local bottle release today to get some traxxx’s night fury. Tickets sold out pretty quick so I got lucky.

Witches hat brewery in south lyon Michigan.

The orange label is traxxx which has a bunch of peanut butter adjuncts. Green top is a rum barrel aged night fury. Yellow bottle is vanilla bean night fury.

Traxxx is my favorite beer ever I think.

Beer peeps,

More sf target misadventures.

4.99 almanac bottles? And foudre punch is amazing. Attempted to buy them for about ten minutes with cashier and customer service trying to figure out how to ring them up before I gave up. Will try again tomorrow!

I'm going Abraxas all day every day (you can get it for $20/bottle??) at that price. Love that beer.

fwiw I have never regretted buying older Old Stock bottles, though I can't for the life of me remember if I've always gotten the barrel-aged stuff (I assume from the price that one isn't BA, but if it is then holy crap buy the store out)

edit: ok so you can see "cellar reserve" and according to their website that means def barrel aged, and the color probably means that's rye whiskey? BUY BUY BUY (though I tend to prefer other barrel types over rye)

Goofy,

That’s rye barrel aged. They could be $10.99/each or any other other price. I’ll check tomorrow.

Yup, but I've never seen it on the shelf again. I always see Prairie Bomb which is similar IMO.

Beer peeps,

Some good stuff last night:

2015 high westified. Wow, this has gotten noticeably better. Coffee is not quite as strong, but these lagunitas bottles have always been a bit hot to me. This has now totally smoothed out, it’s great. Hard to believe it’s 12% it drinks so easy. This was my last 2015 bottle, but I have a bunch of 2016 high westified and 2017 willetized, hopefully they fare as well.

Bourbon county northwoods stout. Really enjoyed this. Like it more than I remembered from the first time, will have to look up my post and see what I said then. Ton of berry flavor, didn’t really get any almond.

Fieldwork raspberry parfait. This is definitely on the dessert side of beers. The name and description are perfect. Kinda like drinking a raspberry creamsicle with a little tartness. At first it seems too sweet, but it’s actually pretty well balanced. Definitely one to share, though.

Edit: oh yeah, also had drakes hopocalypse DIPA. Great!

Now having a KBS as a mid-grocery shopping break. I like it more than the CBS.

Tried buying the almanac and old stock at target, neither of them ring up. No time today to deal with them trying to figure it out.

Hi all--

Heading to Seattle for a trip with some old friends next weekend. Looking to try lots of beers, but focus 70-80% on IPAs and DIPAs. Can you guys help critique and/or add to this list of places were considering?

In rough descending order of priority:

Reuben's
Urban Family
Cloudburst
Populuxe

Also, places to watch the NCAA tournament with optimal beer selection?

Thanks!
