Stein Bar did close several years ago. I was actually there on their last day open. They were rather flagrant since they knew they were closing, allowing people to smoke weed, making really strong drinks, etc.

Nobody's mentioning Taco Mac so it must either be history or have fallen way out of favor, because the one at VA and Highland was a place to be.

I don't remember the name of the place, but one of the gay bars had a drag queen review that I got hauled to once, and had a really great time. Lead queen was named Charlie Brown if I recall.

Last but not least: ElD's beloved Club Anytime, where the entrance line was still going after dawn.

There are just so many Taco Macs, I guess we take them for granted perhaps.

The all night club you are thinking of was called Backstreet. That place was insane. So many drugs, strippers, hordes of gay guys dancing for 12 hours and more drugs. The odds of hearing snorting sounds while in the bathroom were better than 2-1. They sold whipits and had insanely long lines to get in as late as 5 AM. Possible headquarters and definite main hangout for the Velvet Mafia.

My favorite anecdote from that place (I have many, as I went there a lot when I first moved to ATL right after college) came on Halloween. First of all, said line was way long until 6:30 AM. Now, the thing about Backstreet is that there were lots of transvestites there. So... combine the already difficult problem of figuring out who is male and who is female with HALLOWEEN COSTUMES and you have a recipe for making out with a guy when you are into women. I consider myself lucky to have avoided this. One woman (you'll see how I was sure of her sex in a moment) was wearing some strange costume with lots of straps and buckles, and absolutely nothing covering her breasts. Just walking around, nipples waxing in the breeze. Nice costume. She was not so hot, but I had been drinking so that didn't occur to me until the next day.

One last thing about Backstreet: there was a phenomenon called the "Black Rain". You would be standing in one of the high ceiling rooms and something would drip on you. Basically, one of the dance rooms would get so sweaty that moisture would build up on the nasty ceiling and drip down on you. It could stain your clothes slightly black.

Oh man, it was a sad day when they stopped having concerts here. I saw some great shows for like $8 here.

ditto. Does anyone remember the last show they saw there? I believe it was Cake for me.

Don't remember the last but probably my favorite was Barrence Whitfield and the Savages.

Used to see acts there that were just starting out before they got big. Chris Isaak, Lenny Kravitz.... of course the Indigo Girls. Cops used to have to stop people from camping on the street the night before their dates at L5P Pub.

really good food combo in midtown is Everybody's for pizza/beer, then walk over to Murphy's for a slice of chocolate cake.

the cake is the best ive ever had, and ive eaten my fair share of cake

Georgia Aquarium
World of Coke

Are two unique places that are pretty cool. The aquarium is the biggest in the world i think, so if you like nature or the sea go for it. There's a cool part in the penguin exhibit where you can stick your head in and see the penguins walking around.



Coke is like crack in georgia, so the world of coke does really well, and i think it's cool. Also, [censored] pepsi. Coke roolz. they have a cool place where you can taste all kinds of coke products from around the world, which all taste very very different from american soft drinks. Don't try Beverly unless you are a sadist (or is it masochist?).

great choice. you should consider Floataway Cafe for a more casual outdoor patio style meal in warmer weather and Quinones for a v. fancy and v. romantic 10 course set menu dinner.

Doc Chey's should also be in the "cheap restaurant" rotation. As mentioned, brewery tours are a good time.

Wife and I went to Bacchanalia last night at 8:30 and it definitely did not dissapoing. At the front of the building star Provisions has a store where they sell tons of stuff, including all of the wine they serve in the restaurant and a lot of the meats as well. The decor inside the restaurant was great, and the service was absolutely amazing.

We both did the Prixe Fix, which consists of choosing one appetizer, one main course, one cheese dish, and one desert. It was $72/person and with the wine pairing (which i got but she didnt) it was $115. My appetizer was a shrimp and rice pilau which was fantastic, as was the Italian white it was paired with. Main course was a wood-grilled prime tenderloin, which was probably the 2nd best steak ive had in recent memory (best was kobe taster's menu at Craftsteak in the MGM), and a shiraz. I had pecorino romano cheese w/ baby arugala for the cheese dish, which was paired with a riesling. Dessert was a chipotle pumpkin flan, pumpkin pie, and maple pumpkin ice cream, all of which was great. The dessert wine was one of my favorite parts of the meal. It was a french fortified wine similar to Port but was much much stronger. It was amazing and im going to find the name of it since i cant remember it at the moment.

All in all i definitely consider it one of the best places ive ever eaten, and I will definitely be eating there again.

Been living in ATL for about 6 years now. Went to Oglethorpe and now live in Sandy Springs which kinda sucks and most of my experience in ATL is North Atlanta.

For steaks, I really prefer Chops to Bones. The Kobe steak at Chops is as good as it gets. I go to both a fair amount and both and they are the top two in ATL imo. I recently went to Prime and was not as impressed as I'd hoped to be.

Have any of you guys been to Fat Matt's on Piedmont. Seriously the best BBQ Pork sandwich I've ever had in my life and I grew up in the Carolinas.

For bars, I go to a place called Five Seasons that is close to me and they brew their own beeer that is delicious. Also my group of friends spends a lot of time at Pub 71 in Brookhaven, which is a cool laid back bar.

Where do you guys like to go for drinking on weekends? Been going to Limerick Junction in Highlands a good bit lately and always have a good time. Other suggestions?

I discovered this gem too late I have been going every weekend for the past several months. It is so close to where I live that I literally walk home every time I go. They closed their doors last Friday. I am seriously life-tilted by this event. This was the coolest ****ing place, and nothing in the Highlands even comes close to this type of atmosphere.

This place is awesome. I have no idea how the guy does it. Everything I've had there has been delicious. I think the negative reviews come from people who are in a hurry - this is the last place to go if you're in a hurry. We also walk here on a regular basis to enjoy a long, delicious dinner and wine.

Since moving, I have discovered a lot of gems in the Highlands/Poncy area, will post more when I have time.
