I just looked it up and mine is over two years old now and still using the original battery.
The hub based system solves the major flaw of the old harmony remotes, which was when one command would get lost due to line of sight. Just having the remote in a the wrong spot could leave your activity command in limbo, with one random device not doing what it was supposed to do, and then you'd have to trouble shoot it.
The hub system doesn't need line of sight with the remote, and since the remote is the only moving variable, it makes everything run much smoother.
