I have an older Panasonic 50" plasma that I have been waiting for it to go bad so I can get a new 60" led. But your post makes me thing that this plasma is great technology.

Please explain. I do t know anything about home theater.

I just bought a paradigm 100 cy setup with a denon 1300 receiver. I am considering 2 def tech atmos speaker upfiring. Just don't know if atmos will really take off.

Looking forward to installing everything. I went with this setup because I can't fit towers and these rated very highly.

A properly working atmos system is amazing. Your right, you can get upward firing or a ceiling mounting downward firing.

That being said, I don't think these type advanced systems are for me in a conventional home theater. If you had an advanced home theater, then yeah go atmos for sure.

For me, 5.1 is more than enough and I have a very good system.

If you want a larger TV or somehow watch a lot a 4k content then an upgrade makes some sense. If not the picture in a plasma is still going to compete extremely well at 1080p or less with the technologies out there now. Once you go to 4k things change but put it this way if large 4k plasma's were able to be profitably built they would make them. There is definitely a subset of people like me hanging on to their plasma's until the 4k content really catches on.

Do I need a line conditioner? Seems like the high end guys swear by them but they might not make a difference unless you have hum from shared transformers.

I'm looking at the panamax 4000, 4300, but probably end up w the 5100.

i've got an old 42" plasma that is currently my main tv.

moving to a bigger place soon, and was planning on replacing tvs, but sounds like i should hang onto it based on recent comments. maybe i will just put that in the bedroom and get a bigger one for the new living room.

I use a Panamax and love it. I live in a new area so line condition has never been an issue, but I also use monoblock amplifiers that can use the high output outlets because they are more power hungry that almost anything else... except maybe my plasma.

Never had an issue with my unit. I do beleive I have the 4300 and it's just right for running, my two monoblocks, my plasma, integrated receiver, tube preamp, tube amp, oppo Blu-ray player and my stand alone dac... the sub woofer runs directly off the wall outlet.

You'd be surprised... probably under 500$ somewhere if you could find a buyer. Everyone wants bigger than 65".

Stick it in the garage or guest bedroom.

Agreed, the value in a plasma at this point is that any noticeable upgrade is a not a great value $$ wise.

I just moved and took that as a chance to upgrade my living room. Got a 65inch samsung ks8000, pioneer lx 101 receiver, and klipsch reference 3.1 system. I am a total audio noob, but it sounds great so far. Got just a couple questions for your guys.

First, my layout. My house has built-in area for speakers both on the ceiling behind the couch, and bookshelf sized cut outs above the tv.

If I was going for a 5.1 system, how much am I losing by just putting speakers in the ceiling since they are already wired? The other idea would be a matching surround sound set put at a more optimal height. The clean look would be nice if I am not giving up too much.

Also is a 7.1 setup worth it? I have options like new surround sound speakers and then the 7.1 surrounds either in ceiling or in front wall? Or do both in ceiling and front wall instead of adding surrounds? My wife would be fine with adding surrounds but be much happier if I put them in the built ins instead. Thoughts?

Also, am I getting the full 4k from the stock hdmi cable that came with the xbox one? It is connected to the hdcp 2.2? port in my receiver and wanted to make sure it wasn't a weak link.

As long as your hdmi cable is complacent, you are fine there... there is really no point in investing in a high dollar cable, just a good solid construction.

5.1 rear position will be a compromise if positioned in the ceiling... the ideal position is actually not behind your main listening position, but to the side. You can get away with slightly behind the LP but raising them above your head is not ideal even though it would work.

Actually the speakers above your head would be excellent for a Dolby atmos set up, but you would need a AVR that would process the signal. Also, your two positions above the main LR speaker is for your LR height speakers in a 7.1 set up.

On a personal note, I am perfectly happy with a 5.1 set up though I do recognize that 7.1/9.1/11.1 can be really a remarkable listening experience... I am fine with 5.1 because I use my system mainly for music and HT is secondary.

hah - it's 75". i was worried it was going to look huge since my soon-to-be former tv is 42" (although that's in a smaller place).

but it actually looks ok in the room. i think the cabinets help with the scale. seems like prices go up steeply above 75".

only have the soundbar for now. probably will expand to 5.1, but not sure what i will do with the other speakers.

i have a hub set up in a hall closet for cable boxes, dvd players, etc.

Looks good... no room for floor standard though.

My parents might buy a new TV, 60-65 inches. They're not massive cinephiles but they want a TV which ideally is "smart" (they have a Fire Stick to get iPlayer/Netflix/Prime Video so "smart" TV isn't strictly necessary) & will last for many years. i.e something which is unlikely to leave them wanting an upgrade as new technology comes out. What should they look for? Is 4k worth it for them?

Also they'd like something which enabled them to access their UK TV when in their holiday home, preferably along with either the smart features or Fire Stick capabilities. i.e to watch BBC, Netflix etc. when in their holiday home. What is the best way to do that?

Firstly : is this thread dead?

Secondly : how do you figure all of this out, in terms of all the speakers and receivers and dynamics of your particular room?

The more I read about it, the more it seems that it comes down to personal taste. Is that very far from the truth? When I got my first home theater in the box I was like "wow". And then I got a pair of Klipsch floor speakers for the fronts and was like "wow".

Is there some sort of guide to all this crap? I've gone from thinking about getting 4 floors, a sub and a center, to bookshelves to compliment my floors. And I have no idea what Atmos is all about.

I see the LG OLEDC7P 65" for $2700 at BB. (There's a comparable Sony for about $800 more.)

This is the way to go? The price curve for anything larger than 65" is unworkable presently. Is this likely to change in the next 6-24 months? I'd love to have an 80" OLED TV
