We have a conference tourney to decide it- the regular season champ goes to the NIT if they don't win the tourney...but we're gonna win both.

Watched Michigan play OSU today and just like when he was at WV Beilein runs a fantastic offensive system. For a good part of the game they were in a 2 3 set with everyone at the foul line or above. Is that not what princeton does as well? It seems to cause defense havoc and i don't know why more teams run it. I love their system as well- the team we play tomorrow runs a lot of this, but hopefully we shut it down!

With recruiting being so so important in your landscape are you not a little surprised that no one has brought back the westhead system while he was at marymount? Tons of points, tons of press and a system designed for gaudy offensive stats that would surely get the attention of the NBA scouts. Who wouldn't want to play in that system? There are a couple of smaller schools that run something similar to this, but it isn't viable for Division 1 basketball because athletic directors aren't going to settle for having a "show" instead of a winner. They want both.

Looks like you have the opportunity to avenge a loss this week, hope its on TV so I can watch. We sure do, and it sure is. It is on Fox Sports Southwest at 7pm tomorrow (Thursday)...so if you aren't in the region you'll have to go to a bar that has the package.

More questions coming, thanks for doing this.

Thanks, Gil
Honestly, if most of the teams you are playing only have 1-2 players I would be running a zone. When I was coaching Junior High girls we ran a 2-3 zone about 80% of the time. I kept everybody packed inside the arc with the exception of whoever was guarding the ball. Focus on teaching good rotation and then rebounding responsibilities and you should be fine. Let me know if you need help with any of that.

The best dribbling drills BY FAR are 2-ball dribble series drills. Google them, but they are basically just using both hands at the same time.

It is definitely prevalent at the big-time programs, and I am sure that is what you were seeing.

in your view, who is a better college coach, roy williams or coack k? They are both very good- there is no way I'd be able to choose one or the other without at least watching a couple practices of each.

is coach k as huge a prick as he seems on TV? Haha, no idea but most Div 1 head coaches are.

do you hate duke as much as i do? (rhetorical) I was born and raised a Tarheel, so yes.

how many phenoms dont go to D-1 soley because of grades/prop 48 nationwide? Well with the new rules most of them are going D-1 because they don't really have any choices. There will always be a few each year that have to go JUCO because they don't qualify. Unfortunately, most of the time we don't hear from them again.

are recruiting battles for b-ball players nastier/more intense than the ones for football players? I would say that it is worse in football.

how does UT manage to be a reputable school, and still have sooo many hot girls on campus? Because their hot girls are smart? I dunno, but the girl I used to date that went there is a consultant...she is also very hot.

how special of a place is austin? Other than the POS school in the middle of it? its ok.

much much gratitude in advance for your answers
hate texas btw.

Guys, in case you don't read all of the previous posts- we play on Fox Sports Southwest Thursday (tomorrow) at 7pm CST. It is a huge game for us, as we have a huge monkey to get off our back in beating our rival. If we win the game we will pretty much clinch the West Division title, and it will take us one step farther in winning conference.

I hope you call can watch it- feel free to ask questions about the game, but remember- please do not type the full school name out in the thread so that it could be googled.

I'll be watching and hope to celebrate your victory in this thread.

Love the thread.

I've got a few.

1. How good do you think Psycho T will be in the pros
2. How good do you think Augustin will be in the pros
3. It seems like doing screens with an athletic SF would work better than center to make the pick and pop more dangerous, do you agree?
4. I think basketball is the hardest sport by far to ref, do you agree? If so, how many calls do you think refs miss in a game (actually, I'd like to know the answer to this even if you don't think it's the hardest sport to ref)
5. How many points do you think homecourt advantage is worth for your team, at a small school? What about a school like Kansas/UNC/Duke/Wisconsin that has a very strong home record?
6. Do you think home court advantage has more to do with refs being influenced by the fans or because the players get rattled?

3. It seems like doing screens with an athletic SF would work better than center to make the pick and pop more dangerous, do you agree? depends a lot on how the opposing team is defending screens, but yes a lot of the time you are correct

If so, how many calls do you think refs miss in a game (actually, I'd like to know the answer to this even if you don't think it's the hardest sport to ref) I think its tough because the action can move so fast. As for how many calls they miss in a game I really have no idea. Obviously it woudl depend on the level of play, but I think NCAA Div 1 refs are very good.
5. How many points do you think homecourt advantage is worth for your team, at a small school? Last night we sold out our colliseum for the first time since the early 80's and I'd say it helped us by 10 points or so. Other than that I think the travel affects the other team more than being at home helps. What about a school like Kansas/UNC/Duke/Wisconsin that has a very strong home record? I would say 10 points would be about the max it would matter- and it probably matters more for teams that shoot a lot of threes and less for teams that run the floor or pound it inside.
6. Do you think home court advantage has more to do with refs being influenced by the fans or because the players get rattled? I havent seen refs be affected much by the crowd tbh.
thanks for the questions

I've got a friend whose father was a high school coach for 20 years, he's just graduating college this year. He played (is playing) D2 basketball in one of the best D2 conferences in the country. He's got a history degree and wants to teach/coach.

He's currently debating about whether or not to coach in high school (at a small school in Indiana, he could have a head job in 2-3 years with his contacts), or try to get a Grad assistant job at a place like Butler/Valpo, where he also has some connections.

I feel like right now he's currently thinking about "settling" in high school, figuring he can go back to college whenever. He's really not a small time type of guy though, and I feel like big time aspirations at some kind of huge program in college is very possible for him. However, I think he needs to get his foot in the door at the college level (which is what I've always heard) early if he ever wants to do that.

What would you tell him advice-wise about everything in a situation like that?

Absolutely without a doubt he needs to do everything in his power to get a GA spot somewhere- even if it is at one of the really good D-2 schools it would be much better than high school. It is VERY hard to move from high school to college.

When I was looking for a job as a GA I sent out over 200 letters/resumes...

Pyscho T = Hansborough

Do you think he has the athleticism to play the 4 or the size to play the 5?
02-25-2008 , 02:58 PM
I don't think he'll be a superstar, but he'll be a really good player for somebody....unfortunately for him he is kinda a tweener size wise.

Side note/vent- 21-3 (10-2), RPI of 46, Power Ranking of 36, and AP #37 in the country...seems like it would good enough to get some consideration but we aren't even being talked about.

2 conference losses in a lower D-1 conference and an SOS of 247 is your problem for an at-large.

It's been great following your team's progress this year though. I'll be rooting for your squad in the Conf. Tourn.

Hello Casper, have never been a member here but a friend of mine sent me the link to this thread because he knew I would be interested. Just great stuff! Awesome of you to offer up your time and honest opinions like this, let me thank you in advance.

I recently moved from Central Indiana where I was raised, to Boulder Colorado. I fell into an assistant job for an 8th grade Gold Crown team (traveling All-Stars). We played 2 seasons, starting in October and just now wrapping up! I always had coaching in the back of my mind but wasn't sure if I would ever get into it. Well, I have REALLY dived in! I gained some contacts in the Boulder area and got the scouting job for the Boulder High Varsity team, which has been ranked in the top 5 in the state all year! I gained the respect of the coach and since the majority of my team will attend Boulder High, I was offered the Freshman job next year plus a chance to coach the kids all summer in a traveling league, and help with camp. I sought out and introduced myself to Jeff Bzdelik (Colorados coach) since CU is 3 miles from my home, he was gracious enough to allow me unlimited access to every practice, and hooked me up with tickets to several games! I, like yourself have now set my mind to climbing the coaching ranks to a D1 head coaching position. I have no less than about 3,000 questions for you! Could I have permission to email you privately so I don't distract from your thread?

A few to start:

-If your team is who I think it is, did you play Texas Tech in November?
-Is a Masters degree required to get a D1 job?
-Do you think 7-10 years is an accurate time for achieving my goal?
-What does a typical coaching resume look like?
-How much does an average D1 head coach earn?
-Would love some more insight on your work with Billy Gillispie, he is in my top 5 choices of mentors at this time.
-Have you seen Saint Mary's play this year? Coach Randy Bennet is doing some fantastic things there! I saw them out of the blue about a month ago and no team has made a bigger impression on me in 5 years. Would love your comments on this.

Thanks again and hope to speak soon.

-What is the point of coaches who set up their timeouts with little chairs out in the middle of the court?

What are your chances of going to the NCAA if you don't win your tourney?
02-27-2008 , 05:15 AM
Great thread. Wish you the best of luck in making it into the tourney. That being said, I have four questions:

1. Seeing Blake Griffin in person, how good do you think he will be in the NBA? I've heard some people compare him to Boozer.

2. If you guys win your conference tourney an make it to the big dance (knock on wood), what do you predict your seed will be? What mindset do you have for your players (nothing to lose, david vs. goliath, represent conference, etc.)?

3. My friends are huge Duke fans and never shut up. What are their chances of winning it all with their live by the three/die by the three gameplan?

4. You have to pick 4 teams who you think have the best chance of winning it all. Who you taking as of this moment?

Thanks for the response and best of luck against TST tonight.

OP is right about the lack of respect. I was just looking at the ESPN bracketology page. Not only do they not have you winning the conf, they have the winner in the 64-65 play-in game.
02-27-2008 , 01:45 PM
Technically the other school has a better conf. record (even though OPs school gave them their only loss) that is why (better conf record) ESPN and a few others gave the auto bid to the other school.

That's what I figured. It's the fact that they're in the play-in game that really got me though.
02-27-2008 , 04:18 PM
Why so many non-Div 1 games? Awesome season regardless, this will look dam good on your resume. Good luck.

A few to start:

-If your team is who I think it is, did you play Texas Tech in November? Yes- we would beat them if we played them now
-Is a Masters degree required to get a D1 job? Not for all jobs, but for most of them yes
-Do you think 7-10 years is an accurate time for achieving my goal? Your goal of becomming a D1 head coach? If you are a head coach in 50 years you should consider yourself lucky. They are hard jobs to get. 7-10 years is a pipe dream. My goal is to be a HC in 25 years.
-What does a typical coaching resume look like? Schools coached for, responsibilities, achievements, players coached/recruited (signed)
-How much does an average D1 head coach earn? No idea what the average is. For high majors I'd say around 900,000ish. For small schools about 100K.
-Would love some more insight on your work with Billy Gillispie, he is in my top 5 choices of mentors at this time. Great coach. Very loyal. Hard nosed and demands perfection, and a great mentor off the court.
-Have you seen Saint Mary's play this year? Coach Randy Bennet is doing some fantastic things there! I saw them out of the blue about a month ago and no team has made a bigger impression on me in 5 years. Would love your comments on this. We don't have too much time to watch a ton of games other than ours/our opponents. I have seen them a little and they look good.

Thanks again and hope to speak soon.
GL in your quest!

Very Very slim. If we win out and lose to a somewhat respected team in the finals then there might be a small chance depending on how many at large bids there end up being that aren't spoken for by obvious choices.
