What kind of chance does she have vs. Rousey? I really have no idea. I'd like to think she'd be her biggest challenge so far, but it's been too long. She was certainly legit before. If anyone could dethrone Rousey and actually be a good ambassador, it's Gina.

Very little chance. Don't think it will do as well as some people think either.

Alexis Davis may have a serious shot though, not sure why this isn't already being hyped up.

Yeah she should have relatively little chance. Would be more excited for weigh ins than fight.

Meh, that's what I get for going to sherdog after studying for 16 hours. Good catch. Still seems likely I suppose.

Carano is hinting about coming back but theres zero chance she makes 135

in another news Jake Shields got cut by the UFC , im not a big Jake Shields fan but he did beat Maia and Woodley recently . Lombard was a bad matchup for him but i can still see Jake being competitve at WW but UFC gonna UFC .
04-07-2014 , 10:44 AM
UFC gonna UFC?

He had pretty ridiculous pay, like $75K/$75K AFAIK. You think they cut him if he's willing to take $20K/$20K or something? Just reasonable business move this time.
04-07-2014 , 12:56 PM
Just watched Bradley-Pac, got reminded why I stopped watching boxing. Back to MMA for me. What a fricken joke.
04-08-2014 , 02:27 AM
Cutting Shields is ridiculous. He has beaten TWO top ten fighters in the past year. To say that you want to be the premier league of a major world sport, and then consistently keep top level fighters out of your promotion, is a joke.

This might save the UFC a few thousand bucks this year, but then again, maybe not. A well known high level fighter who can headline a card in the right match up is a pretty valuable commodity and the UFC is not exactly running a surplus of top card talent right now. This might be more about spiting Team Stockton after the recent negotiations.

Either way, stuff like this makes the UFC a lot more like the WWE than an actual major sports league.

Yeah, it kinda sucks that they'd rather cut some of the top guys rather than shell out some cash to keep the best ones around. But obviously I can get it. I don't like watching Shields fight. He's boring as **** and his striking is lolbad.
04-08-2014 , 12:03 PM
Meh I don't really hate these kind of cuts. These guys are all old, on the downside of their career, clearly not going to be challenging for the title anytime soon, and are boring as heck.

Fitch/Okami/Shields weren't really going to do anything with more time in the UFC other than put on boring fights and be gatekeepers.

Though I personally like Jake so it's kind of a bummer. I'm sure he'll get a decent contract in WSOF or something though. Might even become champ and get paid more.

MMA is one of the few sports where your skill isn't proportional to excitement in watching you. If you don't put asses in the seats, you can only demand so much money before you get told to **** off. Shields came in at a high price, struggled against top opponents, and never generated much interest. What exactly do people expect a businessman to do with that?

These kind of decisions are exactly in line with other sports leagues (Tebow is a good example). It's just easier to point out in MMA because usually winning=interesting in most other sports.

They should offer a pay/airtime cut every time to at least save some face.

If only the Diaz brothers would do a reality show...

60+60 is not THAT bad. I thought he was on 15+15 which would have been lol.

Nate is not a huge draw by any stretch, right? He's not Nick. He's a scrappy top10 lightweight who will never be the champ and is a toned down version of his brother.

He could fight 3 times a year and probably make 300-500k with sponsorship. Doesn't sound that bad to me.

He's correct in that fighters overall needs to get better deals.

I think good fighters have a lot of value beyond fans buying a ppv card just to watch that individual fighter. There aren't a lot of people tuning in on a given night mainly to see someone like Jim Miller fight, but they are tuning in to see some exciting world class martial arts, something a guy like Miller provides on a consistent basis. He probably doesn't command a great salary but he does provide a lot of value both to fans and the UFC.

Lombard rag-dolling Jake with judo throws was a damn impressive sight, largely because of who he was doing it to. Hitting those same throws on some reckless striker would not have had the same impact. There are so many cool aspects to the sport, I wish the UFC would stop trying to corral guys into certain styles.
