Re: 2012 Music Thread

Are the same bands playing two consecutive weekends, or am I reading it incorrectly?

There is so much winning in that lineup, is it crazy I'd be most excited for Dre/Snoop?

Yeah I think it's the same program repeated on the second weekend.

I think a lot of bands will be slightly disappointing the second time around, especially since half of the first weekend's sets will be on YouTube by then. Bands will need to change up the show.

That cover is awesome and I think I'm now in love with Sarah Blackwood.

New Cloud Nothings record leaked a little while back, good, mostly straightforward rock

Re: 2012 Music Thread

Random question. Anyone know if They Might be Giants is worth seeing live still? Do they just play stuff from the children's albums? I have a conference in Austin in a few weeks and they are playing that night. Just wondering if its a show worth sticking around for.

Saw them do a 45-minute set at Sasquatch 2010 and they played a ton of old stuff, none of it sounded like children's music.

I'm not sure if they still do this or not, but the two times I've seen them they did it:

They will turn on a radio and scan around until they find a song, then start playing along with the beat and chords. Then they just ad-lib a song, making up lyrics and chord progressions based on whatever random song on the radio they started playing along with. I would go out of my way to see them live just for this reason.

The thing is, they are amazing musicians and they sound incredibly tight live... so it will be a good music show no matter what they play. They are guaranteed to sound good, so you can't really go wrong.

Agreed. Much more straightforward than the twisting melodies that made older Shins songs so interesting. Also sounds like he's trying to really fatten up the sound so they aren't so out of place at festivals and bigger venues. A shame, really.

+1

I didn't know much of their stuff at all(except Istanbul!) when I saw them a few years back and I had a really great time at their show with lots of energy. Highly recommend them if you're on the fence.
