It's all awesome but "Try" is my favourite after the first listen.

thus far i'm finding coexist to be much more atmospheric and sonically interesting than the s/t. their lyrics, voices and instrumentation are as good as ever but none of it is vastly different or better than before. jamie's maturation as a producer though is so clear and in the front and he just ****ing runs this record. i felt if the s/t fell flat for me in any way it came in brief lulls in songs like 'fantasy' and 'stars' that i felt were primarily caused by pretty bland soundscapes. there's just so many discerning little details in the songs this time that really flesh out the final product.

i will suck this band's dick until the day i die.

'swept away' is clearly the standout. listen to that **** on some good headphones and bLAoW! 'our song' and 'fiction' are my other two favorites.

both their albums are front-loaded but the back half on this blows the s/t's back half out of the water.

This.

Although Tides might the worst ever xx song.

There's so many little things in this album that I keep picking up, even the fade out on Our Song sounds amazing. Jamie is a ****ing genius. Production is off the charts good.

After 2 listens I like it a lot

If I had one complaint it'd be Jamie's singing voice at times

That's Oliver no?

I actually really like his solo piece on Fiction.

Yeah I'm stupid lol

Pitchfork's list is pretty predictable. Looking at individual ballots was way more fun.

The new XX is just zzzzz to me. It's exactly what I expected. The band just doesn't have any range and I guess I'm not as into what they do anymore.

ya'll can have the xx album, give me a grizzly bear leak plz

So many surprises in the lists, and so much variety in the breakdowns!

i like it and think it's good, but i get what youre saying here. like.. why did it take 3 years to make this album?
08-22-2012 , 08:05 PM
I'm on first listen of xx at the moment and saw them perform some of the new stuff last month. Agree that there's not much progression of sound, especially after all the talk that they'd be incorporating a lot from dance music.

That said, I dig that there really isn't a simple reference point for The xx. They released an album as teenagers that sounded miles from anything I'd heard before, and even if this is just that album redux I'm still giving them points for originality.

Also, they are really young, and I'm hoping that they find that range over the coming years.

they did a ton of touring and jamie produced a ton of stuff. don't see that pattern changing.

the bands that do so and put out consistently good records (thinking bon iver, animal collective, and tv on the radio off the top of my head) all take years in between records. what bands were you thinking of in a similar scenario that are putting out albums more regularly than every 3ish years?
08-22-2012 , 09:26 PM
i mean thinking of other bands that take years in between but generally switch it up enough to warrant such: radiohead/modest mouse/arcade fire

people who just pump out **** and tour and all that: kanye/jay (yeah i know.. rap is different especially in jay's case but i'd say not in kanye's) jack white, sufjan, damon albarn

i mean that's off the top of my head and there are a lot more for sure.

idk i need to listen to coexist more bc i feel like im somewhat playing devils advocate here considering that i actually do enjoy the album

at least make a case that the difference is significant

plus atleast jack white/damon albarn mostly work in bands
08-23-2012 , 12:00 AM
not to mention look at the work of the bands i listed. their albums are distinctly different when they take a long time in between.

Lol at Bon Iver having two albums in the top 30. I was so happy that very few of the 2p2 lists were that high on Bon Iver.

The people's rap top 15, they have 3 picks that didn't have a million number one singles/aren't from the same 3 artists and one of them is ****ing Madvilliany. I would have preferred the general p4k "we aren't racist because we like really stupid rap" than this.

1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2. Outkast - Stankonia
3. Kanye West - The College Dropout
4. Madvillian - Madvilliany
5. Kanye West - Late Registration
6. Jay-Z - The Blueprint
7. Outkast - Aquemini
8. Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below
9. Kanye West - Graduation
10. Jay-Z - The Black Album
11. Jay-Z/Kanye West - Watch the Throne
12. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
13. Kanye West - 808s and Heartbreaks
14. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
15. Drake - Take Care

such a pitchforky rap list (no surprise)

i would never put two bon iver albums in my top 30 because i'm old and all my favorite records were made in the 90's. but i definitely really like both of his proper albums and would certainly rank both in the top dozen or so of the last 5 years. they are really ****ing good and i don't really like that kind of stuff much.

re: xx. i'm enjoying it on first listen, and while i think they are working in the same general palette, i disagree that there's no progression from the first album. biggest difference to me is in the percussion - much more interesting and nuanced. i am not really a big dance music fan but i think they picked some of the "right" elements from current electronic music - i.e. synths / atmospherics that fit with their overall motif.

and really, do we NEED an xx album every 9 months? i don't think of them as doing something that is super artistically necessary or game-changing, they are just a really, really well-executed makeout band, to the point that even an old grouch like me thinks they're good. nothing jamie has done outside the band has impressed me at all.

don't care what anybody at p4k thinks about rap. in fact, barely care about any rap made after 2004 or so. haha pudge you're right about their super obnoxious patronage of terrible, ignorant rap music
