The Duke Spirit -- whose Neptune is one of my favorite albums of recent years -- rocked the Echoplex in L.A. They premiered this new song that I'm loving:
And the old hits like "The Step and the Walk" and "Lassoo" were amazing. Liela is outrageously sexy on stage and puts on a hell of a show.
Also, opening up were Hacienda, a Texas band who impressed the hell out of me with bass-driven melodies and a psychedelic rock '70s sound reminiscent of The Black Keys. nyc999 tells me that Hacienda were Dan Auerbach's band on his solo recording. Makes sense!
bookpack cd. haunting debut album from the magnetic north, the new project from erland cooper (erland and the carnival), simon tong (gorillaz, verve, blur) and hannah peel (of last year's 'the broken wave' album). 'orkney: symphony of the magnetic north' was inspired by a dream of erland's, in which he was visited by betty corrigall, an orcadian girl who in the 1770s committed suicide (having been outcast from her village for falling pregnant out of wedlock). the resulting long player, recorded in various locations across the orkney islands, is a collection of beautiful, evocative songs, at times reminiscent of nancy and lee, at others king creosote and jon hopkins. the band recorded with the stromabank pub choir while they were in the north, and will be bringing the choir to london later in the year for a live performance.
So pumped for new xx. Just entered a ballot to see them in July as well.
Just listened through Django Django's album. Absolutely love it on first listen through. Fun, jaunty, pastiche of every a really wide variety of styles. Really fresh sound.
lol.
this should be better, it's co-produced by damon albarn. title song is extremely bad.
ah. lol. richard russell involved as well; he owns XL recordings (the xx, adele, taylor the creator etc.) and is responsible for the terrible gil scott-heron album.
only had one listen of tallest man and i quite like it, nothing really stood out to me but it usually takes a few listens of his albums to really get into them
Hated Spector. The guy reading Anthony Kedis - Scar Tissue ironically in the video was the worst. Can the age of irony please be over? FWIW I actually really like Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but I do refer to them as the "pussy" Jesus and Mary Chain.
Listened to most of the videos posted on the last two pages...not much for me. I already loved Real Estate. I did really enjoy the Hot Chip song.
edit: also, if you are an indie rock band, and your video has a scene where you and your friends goof off in a quickie mart, you are dead to me.

Yeah the Japandroids album is sounding better today. It is giving me a youthful, knotty fun-anxiety feeling...like when I was on my way to a boy-girl party in school.
