Re: 2012 Music Thread

My good friend's band "Rubblebucket" has a new EP out today. They've been touring hard for a long time and are finally starting to get some pretty decent exposure (recently were on Jimmy Kimmel, two shows at Bonnaroo this year).

Anyway, they started out as more of an afro-beat group years ago, and now they are much more "indie pop with horns", which is a welcome shift, imo. New stuff is really good, and they put on an incredible live show, so if you get a chance to see them, I would hop on it. They are on a co-headline tour with Reptar... who I caught last spring and were surprisingly decent.

Re: 2012 Music Thread

Of the 7 songs that weren't already released Cruel Summer
One legitimately good song
A Kanye/R-Kelly collaboration, which isn't great, but I am glad exists.
A solid Kid Cudi song, if you like Kid Cudi
4 really bad songs

A Ghostface verse added to New God Flow.

Was able to score a ticket to the Band of Horses album release party last night. The old tracks were plentiful and awesome, however I think the new album is pretty weak in both live and album form.

Was bored at work today and played around with the Austin City Limits schedule http://lineup.aclfestival.com/codogg...le/2012/10/12/

Any "sleeper" bands I might be missing out on at this festival.

Pretty solid schedule. As far as lesser-known bands that I wouldn't miss, I would say Father John Misty and Alt-J. The Lumineers are no longer a sleeper band, but I wouldn't miss them in case you needed to be reminded of that.

Gary Clark Jr. is the one non-headline act that I would urge you to go out of your way to see. He's one of the best guitar players in the world and is just a fantastic live blues act to see. His set was one of the highlights of both Coachella and Sasquatch this year.

Saw Buke and Gase/Deerhoof last night. Very good, though the sound for B&G was subpar. Deerhoof absolutely killed it.

Saw Wye Oak tonight and they were amazing. My god can Jenn Wasner sing.

Saw Ariel Pink live last night. Didn't kno what to expect going in because I had heard nothing but bad things about his live show. I was literally blown away with how good this show was. Band was extremely tight, Ariel was ridiculously entertaining.

cool. i'd like to see him too but was i was a bit apprehensive since he's given a few bad live shows, some with his back turned to the crowd i think - but maybe it depends on the crowd.

i saw fiona apple last week in san francisco and she was amazing. better live than i expected. been listening to her album a lot since then. really good.

Love This Giant is a contender for album of the year. Pretty much every track is layered well enough that I want to repeat. It's a fun, eccentric album. "I Should Watch TV" is an incredible song.

The Grizzly Bear release is really good but I feel let down because "Yet Again" is the best track on the album, and it set the bar too high for the rest.

Re: 2012 Music Thread

saw godspeed last night.

there were only five musicians (two drummers, two bass players and a violinist).

having never seen them live, they were much more ambient and droney and LOUD than i expected from the records. this was one of the loudest concerts i have ever been to, certainly in a club venue.

every instrument had massive delay - reverb - distortion chains and it was often quite difficult to figure out who was making what noise (even as a musician who is somewhat knowledgeable about these things). songs would end and the feedback / delay loops would go on for two or three minutes.

in reading up on some of their other recent gigs it doesn't seem like they are routinely touring with only 5 members, so i kind of got the impression that this was an ad-hoc or a last minute type of thing. a throw in gig before ATP. i dunno.

it was pretty good but not as good as i hoped.
