Here's the story with tl;dr cliffnotes at the bottom.
My earliest memory of playing poker for money was my freshman year of college. Me and 3 or 4 friends would get together once a week and play $.05/$.10 poker, whatever crazy ass game the dealer wanted. I like the games with wild cards the best because it was fun constantly having big hands. Whenever we'd play NLHE, I was pretty intimidated by not knowing what to bet and the thought of losing your whole stack on one hand.
Fast forward about a year. I'm playing in local bar tournaments quite regularly, which, at $15 - $25 per entry and having only the top 3 get paid, gets really expensive. I had only played a little online at that time - bought my first poker book "Play Poker Like the Pros" and got one of those free deposit deals on Party Poker, and proceeded to slowly lose money playing limit poker. But I was reading everything I could afford/get my hands on. This was still before I discovered "flat mode" on 2+2. I play live at the casino sometimes, $1/$2 NL because it's the lowest stakes they offer. I have a few big wins, a few big losses, but mostly, I suck at poker despite thinking I am a good player.
I moved from Michigan to Minnesota in December of 2006. Luckily, the restaurant I got a job at hosted a free poker tournament every week, with cash prizes to the top two. So that filled my live poker itch. I started playing free money tables on Full Tilt. I entered in every nightly freeroll I had time to play in. I cashed in one for $2, but lost it pretty quickly. Eventually, I cashed in a PPA Drive freeroll that had a ridiculously easy payout structure, landing myself a whopping $5 (cue foreshadowing music). I took my entire bankroll to 10NL just to see how much I could make off it. Over the next couple days, I had fun seeing just how far I could go, eventually QUADRUPLING MY ENTIRE ROLL to $20! I decided to make better use/less risk of my money by playing $1 SNGs. I studied SNG strategy from FTR, and eventually, my $5 turned into ~$120. I decided to make the switch to cash games because apparently there was more money in it (so I had read). I ONE TABLED 10NL for a while, playing 100 hands per session. Eventually, I bought a poker tracker for Mac and 3-tabled, grinding my roll up to $400+
I took multiple shots at 25NL, the fourth time being the one that stuck. I managed to get my roll up to $800 with no major downswings, just playing straight ABC poker. Then it happened. I had my first "big" downswing. But on top of that, I was spewing all over the place. I lost over half my bankroll. My $800 turned into $300 in less than 30 days. My dreams of turning $5 into thousands and thousands was almost shattered. I dropped down to 10NL (ugh...again) and moved my roll over to Stars. I focused on not spewing and playing solid poker, and eventually got my roll back up and running, moved back to 25NL, and hit $1k bankroll for the first time.
It was around this time that I got approached for a staking deal by Split. Obviously I jumped all over it. I'm currently playing on FT, still with my $1k on Stars waiting. My goal is to be playing and beating 100NL by the end of the year. I'm still playing 25NL, building my roll, and have plans to shot take 50NL again by the end of the month/beginning of november. I currently 12-table, and over 60k+ have beaten 25NL consistently for 5 - 6 PTBB/100.
tl;dr
- live poker = lol
- phil hellmuth's book is not work it
- i run good with $5
- I turn $5 into $1k
- 100NL here I come!
