On a board of...say...9s Th Ks, there are a whole mess of hands you could be raising with including sets, 2pair hands, pair/draw hands, straights...there are a ton of hands that have the same or more equity than a 1pair hand here so it's much easier for villain to put you on something better and fold.

To elaborate a little more on board textures and bluffing - you should also be thinking about how many turn cards can show up that will make the villain feel uncomfortable before you decide to bluff. The reasons are: A) it will make the villain less likely to call your bluff with a made medium strength hand and B) it will make it easier to continue the bluff on the turn when the scare card hits.
On a board like 9

T

K

there are a whole slew of turn cards that can show up and scare the crap out of the villain. On a board like K

5

6

there aren't that many.
No limit hold 'em is a great game because it's a multi-street community card game, which means you need to plan your strategy out in accordance - ie. don't be re-active, be proactive.
As always, when you're bluffing keep your opponent's tendencies in mind -- ie. don't bluff stations or maniacs - make sure the villain is capable of folding hands.
edit: fwiw, I still think I vi's OP should be added to the master sticky.
