Zzzzzzz...back home after a week in Vegas.

It was a busy week listening to speakers talk all day, going out eating and drinking at night with a little sleep in between.

Detox and a sleeping for a week now

Awesome gameshow concept. But that move is brilliant.

I wonder if the stock guy ever put it together or if he ended up choosing Split because he "had no choice"

Also, would have been pretty lol to see him put it together and then steal!

At work:

*looking over co-workers shoulder*, "College girls powerpoint **** list?"

third-party "I'm willing to crash my computer over that"

So awesome.

I don't get the split/steal game. Why would you ever choose split? Doesn't seem like it would be to your advantage to so.
04-23-2012 , 03:05 PM
Because if you both choose steal, nobody gets any money.
04-23-2012 , 03:08 PM
But, if you choose split and the other guy chooses steal then you still don't get any money. I don't see how it is ever to your advantage to choose split unless the other person was your best friend who you knew you could trust.
04-23-2012 , 03:21 PM
Well, that's the dilemma.
04-23-2012 , 03:25 PM
Maybe I'm missing something. I don't see the dilemma. It seems like the optimum play is to always steal while trying to convince the other person to split. I can't see where it is ever advantageous to split.

Once the other guy chooses "steal", you can never get any money. Even the situation in the video, I would have chosen steal rather than taking my chances in trying to recover money from the guy once he wins and decides not to pay.

ETA: I guess that is the whole point of the game, maybe. To watch some sap get talked into splitting while the other guy intends to steal.

Maybe this'll help. It's commonly called the Prisoner's Dilemma, where you and a buddy are both being interrogated. There are the following options with consequences:

If neither of you talk, you both get 2 years in prison.
If one of you talk, the talker gets to go free but the other person spends ten years behind bars.
If you both talk, you both spend ten years behind bars.

You can't communicate with the other person. Do you talk or stay quiet?

I might be screwing up the numbers on that, but that's the gist. It's a very common Game Theory question.

Same as with the prisoner's dilemma, isn't the best strategy to always confess? Excepting the one rare condition where you know you can totally trust the other person.

Golden Balls is not a dilemma. Splitting is dominated by stealing. The difficult part is to convince the other player to split.

I remember seeing a clip of Liv Boeree (sp?) on that show.

GTO is to steal since you win 50% of the pot on average if your opponent is random as opposed to 25% if you pick split.

The thing about this game is that, unlike poker, it's not a zero sum game. If you could play the game over and over again, you'd have an incentive to keep splitting, assuming the other person does so as well.

Altruisim/Trust should never come into play in raw game theory.

the big dude didn't seem convinced that he was convincing. I think he did well to play right away, not let the broker think things through, just come out guns blazin!
