I would agree as well though Sammy brought up some good points. Though there are entire seasons where he isn't the focal point, overall there isn't another character they focus on more than him throughout the series. I think another fact that points to him being the closest thing to a main character is:

What is the consensus on Messi? From a futbol novice, he seems to be reckless player that happens to score a lot. Not as artistic as the other greats.

Stunning player and he'll end up being one of the all time greats. What's your definition of artistic here?

To add to the above, my favourite player of all time is probably Zidane. He just had such a graceful style imo.

Messi has a different style and plays in a different position. He's not playing in midfield and spraying passes about all over the place. His game is all about taking people on, playing fast 1-2's and sticking the ball in the net. He plays at an incredible pace and his touch and balance is just stunning to watch. The lad has been voted World Player of the Year for the past 3 years in a row and the scary thing is he hasn't even reached his peak yet.
