Wyoming passes a right to carry concealed weapons law this year. Even Vermont has a right to carry ffs, and they're all basically Liberals there!

Concealed-carry gun law goes into effect today in Wyoming

That will be a major change for those 10 people living there.

Shouldn't they only be allowed to carry Derringers? You don't want one person having a magazine that allows them to wipe out the state all at once.

I'm generally in favor of more gun control, registrations, waiting periods, etc. But this was a very well written and reasoned argument opposed to general bans:

I agree that you have to look at both capability and intent. However I doubt very much that it is more feasible to change people's intent than to restrict their capabilities, in particular in the short term.

I can think of approximately zero reasons to own an AR-15 that don't involve the words "killing people".

I also have a hard time with the author hanging his hat on the fact that it's not fully auto or burst fire. It's still a semi-auto ASSAULT RIFLE.

Also, it's conceivable that one could purchase one of these and convert it to a fully automatic (read: military) rifle.

Re: /*** Official "No money in chat, everone's silent" July chat thread ***/

I'm not really convinced the waiting period does much. I'm sure it had its purpose when a background check wasn't almost instantaneous.

You can't legally own a gun if you've:
  • been convicted of any felony
  • been convicted of assault
  • been convicted of domestic violence
  • had a drug charge
  • been committed to a psychiatric ward

Or are facing charges for any of these.

So basically, it can't rule out if you will ever use it maliciously, but if you have shown tendencies to in the past.

I mean, it's the same thing with a background check to get a position of authority over minors - it checks to see if you've molested in the past or been violent. It can't tell if you're going to in the future.

A year ago, Jerry Sandusky could have taught preschool.

Here are some interesting facts:

In one year, guns murdered 35 in Australia, 39 in England and Wales, 194 in Germany, 200 in Canada, and 9,484 in the United States.

The Gun Murder stats per 100k > US: 4.14 Canada 0.76 Australia 0.44 Germany 0.22 England/Wales 0.07 . US has the highest.

Not surprised at the UK figures (well most of the UK) given how strict the gun control laws are over here. They definitely work.

That said, banning all guns isn't the answer. It's tough to get a hand gun in Canada and we still have gun violence (ie. gun heavy gang violence in Toronto).

I don't know what the answer is..... you can't un-invent guns and I know a couple of people that hunt. I see no reason to infringe on their right to hunt for sport.
Saw it in Documentary, and it was actually comparing Detroit to that Canadain town across the way . Stats are misleading as you have to figure out what you are comparing. Is it small weapons, automatics, registered, people register, etc.

I still need to double-check this, but apparently Germany has one of the highest rates of firearms per capita. Together with our low rate of homicide involving firearms this actually strengthens the anti gun control position

FYP. Life would be so much better if personally piloted automobiles became an anachronism!

It is interesting how we (the nation) respond to something like US terrorism (less than 5k US deaths a decade?) vs drunk driving (~100k per decade)?

Likewise, marijuana is a pernicious narcotic that must be illegal or else society will be destroyed while tobacco and alcohol (my drug of choice) are perfectly legal.

Clearly there is more at work than rational thought when it comes to formulating the laws of (any) society.

((likes parenthesis))

I am in Japan this week and few thoughts:

Never thought I would have raw cow tongue and think it was amazing, but it was.

Got to love the Irish (half of my heritage), no matter where I am in the world, I can find a nice Irish bar and get a Jameson on the rocks.
