If the Button bets and the other player folds, then I think OP's action is read dependent on the Button's style of play.
I know that checking may give free cards to the other players on a draw heavy board. .
After thinking about this hand more checking may have been better agaisnt these player type as they wont bet 1 pair hands on this board and only bet 2 pair or better and see what the river was, I guess at the time I didnt want to give that free card and play passive like always.
