There are 1,326 combinations of starting hands in Texas Hold'em in total. the 98 of spades is exactly 1 combination. If it`s given as a fact that you have the spades royal flush there is 1 in 1326 chance he has 98s. However he probably doesn`t call ATC preflop so you can say it`s 267 hands if he calls around 20%.
    1. If you are already dealt the royal flush there is a 0.03% chance of him having exactly 98s or 1 in 267.
    2. If you are just about to deal a hand the chance that you will get royal flush + he will get straight flush the very next hand is
    1/649740 * 1/267 = 1/173 480 580 = winning millions from the lottery.
The calculation is very very rough because i did not remove the dead cards(no time for doing free ****) so the chance is actually bigger!

If you play enough hands, you'll see enough monsters eating other monsters that you find this kind of stuff mildly interesting, but not interesting enough to post.

Believe it or not, I saw this in a home game, except it was AK vs 98. Can't recall the exact suits, think it was hearts, but needless to say lots of action on the river lol.

Give the guy a break, he clearly hasn't come across this situation yet. Might even be his first Royal.

    Thanks guys.

I've played hundred of thousands of hands and had dozens of royals, never seen one up against a straight flush.

WereBeer thanks for your reply, it added absolutely nothing.

I just became a member and the first hand I read after register is this one, haha. It would probably be laydown of the year even if he was IP though so can't really blame his post flop play. But would you guys make that call as standard?

I've spent the better part of the last 5 years playing Omaha, so this is pretty standard for me. Actually doing the opposite of most people and transitioning back into holdem lol. Got tired of the swings. Hoping to grind holdem and play Omaha occasionally for the fun aspect, as the swings are quite brutal at times.

Yeah Omaha is a different beast entirely.
I've dipped in a few times and dipped straight back out again due to variance.
AAxx hands much less likely to win at showdown than in holdem.

You're welcome, seems appropriate as it's a nothing kind of thread.

If you really care about the maths rather than the 'wow' factor, take it to Poker Strategy.

For a 'nothing thread' you're contributing plently.

Maybe some other 2nl players might find it an interesting hand in terms of how unlikely it is to get beaten when you're holding a straight flush?

And yes I was interested in the maths which is why included in the title what are the chances of this happening?

Villain's shove is bad, and he should feel bad. A decent calling range consists of 100% royal flushes in this spot. He's blocking 2nd and 3rd nuts, is he expecting to get a call from a 7 high flush?

...so the math doesn't matter. This thread is nothing.

Right OK I accept what you guys are saying. Villains shove is a bit pointless as the only hand thats going to call it is the royal.

    I'll get there eventually....
