2,500 Posts: Ask Me About Being a Poker Dealer (OT)

Since I have nothing to offer this forum in the way of strat for 2,500, backed by popular demand I was asked to enlighten some of you about what my life as a dealer and a player is like. Ask away...

When I get pooh-bah I hope to have something less boring to offer to you guys lol

How did you get into dealing?

What's the license that you have to get?

Did you go to school for it? If so, how much was the school?

Did you have a job lined up before you went to the poker school?

What games do you deal?

Do you do any other games (like blackjack, craps, etc.)?

I think that will suffice for now.

Hey Rod. Where do you deal? How do you deal with annoying players that complain of you dealing bad cards to them?

I was in college and every Monday after Italian class I would drive the 2 1/2 hours to AC from Bethlehem, P.A. I would go to the Borgata and these dealers had like 4-500 in their box, all of them. I did the math, I make more dealing that I would right now with my degree.

What's the license that you have to get?

In AC it's called a 2-1 license, or a CCC license.

Did you go to school for it? If so, how much was the school?

For tables games you have to go to school. For poker, you dont but I did anyway. I moved from North Jersey to South Jersey for this job, so I needed to make sure I got it my first try I would have gone broke. It was $350ish, sick sick value. If anyone is in the area and wants to get into dealing PM and I will tell you just where to go.

Did you have a job lined up before you went to the poker school?

No, its a pretty cool story how I got the job tho...hint hint

What games do you deal?

I have dealt NLHE, LHE, PLO Limit O8, and Stud Hi (tourney)

Do you do any other games (like blackjack, craps, etc.)?

HELL NO!

I think that will suffice for now.

What are the highest stakes you've delt? (ie. do the high limit section have special dealers?)

Hey Jay, I deal at the Showboat in Atlantic City. There are a number of ways you can talk to players like that. I like to tell them until I have dealt you 100 hands I dont want to hear about you not getting any cards...I just sat down. If its consistent that they never win with me, it becomes sort of a joke.

I have also said, "I didn't play your hand for you, you have no one to blame but urself." Only in one occasion with a really miserable man. We call him smiley.

I worked a tournament at Borgata in the winter. One saturday night they asked me to go deal cash and I dealt 2 10/20NL games 5k max. I dealt 2 10k pots. It was cool.

In my room there is no special selection, but there is a post in the B&M forum right now that says in some rooms that is the case. My rooms biggest game is a 5/5NL game 1kmax. We are a smaller room.

I was painting my appartment and my buddy that worked at the dealer's school called me and told me someone from the Showboat is coming in and we told her about you. She want to see you. The first night I f'ed everything up out of nerves. She told me what to work on and the next night I went over to the school to practice. She was there again, I looked better but still shaky. She told me what to work on again, and asked me to come to the audition a few days later. I literally dealt 3k hands on my table at home from that day to the audition and I killed it. They called me back and I was in.

Harrah's who owns SB was on a hiring freeze right after and I didnt get into the poker room until 2 months later where I dealt the WSOP Circuit event at Harrah's and the Borgata Winter Open in between.

How long is a usual shift?

8 Hours, I tend to work overtime because of my time start

Do you get a salary or just tips?
4.3/hr lol, when I deal tourneys I am getting $16per

What school did you go to in Bethlehem?

Any good home games or players that you know of from around that area (Allentown, Quakertown, etc) ?

Do you ever come back to the area?

  • most mentionable/funny/annoying/disgusting story (pick one)? Ill give 2: A guy who got sucked out on left and came back and threw a white chip ($1) at the guy who rivered him and cut his eye open huge. The other was this guy was really drunk and pissed himself. The pit manager on duty was just about to get off. He pointed it out to the next pit coming in and said, "have fun" and laughed.
  • do you enjoy the job? ambitions for the future? I love my job, idk if i can deal forever tho. I want to be a teacher, Idk if I can handle that tho either. I am kinda in this in between stage of do I wanna be in the casino business or not.
  • % of players beeing drunk/wasted in some way/out of line? 10%
  • best lines to take to look like a fish? Wear full tilt gear and say you are a 1/2NL pro
  • most important thing you learned not to do at a poker table? Lose focus.
  • compare live play vs. online play? Its so gross, think 2004 online poker
  • do tips per shift make for a significant amount of your income on average? It is my income, I make $100 per week besides tips.
I have a funny feeling like I will be in the business forever actually, for long term ambitions...to run my own poker room.
