Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT

Only do it if you're prepared to lose $100,000. That's at least what you'll spend for a lifetime supply of cigarettes.

Seriously, the risk is nowhere near the reward in this bet. Cigarettes have killed more people with lung cancer than EVERY SINGLE WAR COMBINED!

You may think that it's easy to quit after smoking for a month, but a cigarette addiction is unlike any other. The more you smoke, the more you need another one. It's a vicious cycle that can enslave you (like it does to millions) for the rest of your life.

When I first started smoking, I always said to myself "I could quit right now if i wanted to. I'm not addicted." But I never did quit, and paid for it through the nose for 10 years until I finally put down the disgusting, smelly sticks a month ago, hopefully for good.

You're severely underestimating the power of cigarettes if you take this bet. Don't be a fool.

I think it would be harder to start smoking a pack a day than to quit.

You'll look like a douchbag.

But seriously, its been proven that if you quit smoking before the age of 26-28. Your lungs and heart will heal back to "presmoke" condition.

Best a luck to you.

First off, I got my proof from a Maxim magizine. So that should settle any concerns you might have. As for quiting at the age of 29, well, your just goning have to ask Dr. Maxim.

I say don't take the bet. It's too hard to smoke a packet per day.

Long term health isn't the issue and I don't think addiction is the issue. The issue is that it's pretty hard to smoke a pack a day. Your mouth will feel like an ashtray. Your clothes and everthing around you will reek.

This is just patently false.

Pipe and cigar smokers don't inhale as a rule, but they still get the "benefits" of nicotine.

This bet is a really bad idea, imo.

all you guys are severely overestimating the addiction factor, as others have said it will be much harder to actually finish a pack a day for that long...especially for a non-smoker. i've been a casual smoker for ~6 years and i can't even imagine smoking a pack a day for that period of time

This is the real point. Could OP even get to a pack a day if he has never smoked before? I (as a reformed smoker) used to smoke 1/2 pack a day and if I smoked 1 pack it made me sick. I can't imagine what it would be like for someone who did not smoke at all. Actually fitting 1 pack a day into your routine will even be tough if you are not used to it. You have to smoke when you get up, in the car, before bed etc just to fit it all in.

Yeah but the sheer volume necessary is much higher. One cigar = about a pack of cigarettes as far as the volume of tobacco. Absorption through your mouth is much less than through your lungs.

I'd guess it takes most smokers about 6 months to build up to a pack a day.
