Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT

It should be easy to quit after only a month

Quitting won't be the hard part. And I doubt a pack a day for a month will do any long-term damage.

You are going to lose this bet because it is so hard for a non-smoker to go from non-smoking to smoking a pack a day for a month. You'll probably be so sick after 3 days you won't be able to look at a cigarette..

As I said earlier in the thread I would have the option to slowly ramp up to a pack a day before the bet commenced, if I wished. IF I can find more people to get in on this bet I will reconsider

I'd bet on you... seriously, it's not that hard to quit after only a month. It shouldn't be very hard at all. Smoking for 3 years and then quitting is a different story, for some people.

It's speculated to be genetic whether or not someone gets seriously addicted. Basically in all cultures, 70 % of long term smokers can quit cold turkey.

Pokerdemic's point is really crucial imo, and I can't believe I missed it. If you don't successfully smoke a pack a day for a month, do you lose or is it no bet? I smoke and probably love cigarettes more than anything outside my parents, girlfriend, and dog, and it makes me queasy thinking about smoking that much.

Quitting nicotine is pretty easy if you have the right mentality. After using for over 15 years I just one day decided to quit. Physical abstinence gone in 2-3 days (or even shorter). Rest is just willpower. I knew after one week I would never fail and I have been clean for a year now. No nicotine substitute is my advice since you want to cut off the supply of nicotine to the brain.

If the OP has faith in his willpower, this would be a low risk bet. Still quite nasty since smoking isn't very pleasant of course. Most start when they are young and stupid.

I would take up a bet like this in a heartbeat. I know I can start and stop at will.

This bet is so ****ing stupid on so many levels with that small bet size. Try smoking a pack a day (20 cigs). You will feel absolutely ****ing insanely bad. And quitting after that isn't as easy as you think.
**** the health risk (probably isn't very much) but the addiction will be there.
I know this because I've seen it and I've experienced it myself.

Long term health risk isn't bad at all. You could smoke a pack a day for a year, the lungs heal themselves pretty well after you quit. I have been told something along the lines of: if someone has smoked for 10 years, and quits cold turkey for 2-3 years their health risks decline to that of a non smoker.

Short term health risks might be much higher, all that all at once when your body hasn't adjusted for it over time. Heart attack at 21 anyone?

if you do this I think you could get a lot more $$$ out of it via publicity/ a tv special? maybe contact your local smoking researchers too. they might be interested

smoking is much harder if you could keep your consumption to like a line (or shot or however you do it) every 2 days. i wouldn't even consider a month of that an addiction.

I would take that bet in a heartbeat. make your buddy go at least 50/50 on the cigarettes (will be like 120 bucks for three cartons). The satisfaction of being able to say "i quit" will be so worth it.

Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT

This is crazy, but a real sick prop bet. I have never smoked, and....forget about the quitting part. I would not smoke a pack of cigarrettes a day for a month for $250,000.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. If they flat out just paid you $1,000 to carry around a piece of paper that was on fire for a month....it wouldn't be worth it, and that is not as bad as smoking a cigarrette.

Imagine the pure hell that would be your life if you actually lost this bet....for any amount. You would have to pay them money, and you would think about them every time you lit up for the next 40 years.

I don't think I would even do it for a million. It is nasty, and the nightmare of trying to kick the habit if I did get addicted would likely turn me into a homicidal maniac.

I wouldn't shoot someone's dog for a million. These types of things just send you to psychological places that aren't worth going to.

Haven't people tried living in public bathroom's for good money? That is the type of brutal thing that is worth it....if the money is right, because once you are done......you get to enjoy the money without the mental torture.

idk about you OP, but if I were in your shoes this bet would be a lock...most people that cant quit cigarettes are pathetic...tell them to try quitting heroin and see if they still complain

I got thinking, really if I lose I am down about $800 and if I win I'm up $1200. This didn't seem worth it so i declined.

I am aware of the obvious health risks involved with this and I decided not to do it with that amount of money but he said he could get some people to throw in some more money. So he got back to me and decided on $825 on a 3:1 bet.

I have done prop bets in the past and I have great will power (lost 20 lbs in one month), is this bet really worth the potential risk of addiction?
If the other guy is buying me the cigarettes, I would do it for less, and for 1:1 odds
