Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT
So one of my friends was smoking the other day and I jokingly said 'you still haven't quit?' (he's been trying for months). He then proposed to me that I couldn't quit smoking cold turkey and that he would lay me 3:1 odds on a $500 bet.
I got thinking, really if I lose I am down about $800 and if I win I'm up $1200. This didn't seem worth it so i declined.
I am aware of the obvious health risks involved with this and I decided not to do it with that amount of money but he said he could get some people to throw in some more money. So he got back to me and decided on $825 on a 3:1 bet.
I have done prop bets in the past and I have great will power (lost 20 lbs in one month), is this bet really worth the potential risk of addiction?

How will they verify your consumption?

Risking your life and thousands of dollars on future cigarette purchases to win $825 is RETARDED!....if u do it see who pays for the cigs when you start smoking?

It would have to be a lot more money. Only to $825 ?? You would need to get at least $3500 because the cost of cigs around me is absolutely ridic and the amount of time putting in smoking these cigs and the -EV of ass and attractiveness from constantly smelling like an ashtray and bad breath its tough man probably not even worth it

i'm not sure it's worth it, but if you're not a teenager, this bet is a lock. adults are much more resistant to nicotine addiction, and it's more a function of time than amount anyway. so, e.g., if the bet were that you had to smoke 4 cigarettes a day for 5 months and then quit, it would be much much harder.

Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT
I was getting 3:1 on 825.. so my cost is roughly $1000 to win $2475.
I 21 years old and I know all about the appearance of smoking, however I don't really care, if people ask ill tell them straight up im doing it to prove a point and win some cash while Im at it.
The health risks are huge, and I agree that the risks of addiction are always there.

Only if you can get a good story in the process. The results might be quite valuable to a medical researcher.
Heck, even if you lose, you have a funny/sad prob bet story. "Daddy, why do you smoke?" "Sigh... I started 20 years ago for a bet."
To win, just arrange for someone to hold you against your will somehow, i.e. keep an eye on you at the least, physically restrain you, lock you in your room for a couple of days if necessary.

Exactly, plus I work at the same place as most of the people involved in the bet so if I smoked it would be noticed.

Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT
if you never smoked a pack a day would be hell for the first week or so I imagine... I also seriously doubt that 30 days and quitting would damaging your lungs longterm...
Also, if you don't quit you longterm cost would be much higher...

Re: Prop bet: Take up smoking a pack a day for 30 days, and QUIT
There are risks of course but it seems like you are confident you have the willpower. I would just do some casual google research and see if you can find out data about smoking over a month and how much the nicotine affects you. I really doubt smoking that much will hurt your lungs long-term.... I would seriously consider taking the bet. And if you care about the cost of the cigs cutting into your profit you could probably ask your buddies to split the cost of them or up the odds.
