I couldnt help but wonder what those maximum security inmates had done to get into that prison in the first place, which stopped me from enjoying it.

If I was a victim of one of their crimes and saw them having a jolly old time dancing to choreographed michael jackson music like that I would feel a little bit pissed.

You'll feel better if you realize they're basically slaves for the wardens amusement in a crooked country where the warden is a relative of the governer.

It's actually a pretty messed up situation as I understand it.

The wiki only mentions:

Quote:
The British Channel 4 Documentary "Murderers on the Dancefloor"[22] broadcast in January 2008 portrayed life in the prison. The program showed various inmates praising Byron Garcia, the founder of the initiative - many of whom had tattoos in recognition of Mr Garcia. However, it also featured an anonymous ex-inmate who claimed Mr Garcia employs certain prisoners to rough up with prisoners who refuse to dance.
Quote:
Responding to various criticism and persistent negative comments in the YouTube response section and alleged use of force to make the prisoners dance and using torture against dissenters who refused to take part, Byron F. Garcia who runs the prison and posts the videos put out a comment on the main page of CPDRC on YouTube refuting the allegations. He says in his message: "There are sick people who think that dancing is a form of cruel punishment! Since when was dancing categorized as punishment? My fellow citizens of the world, cruel and violent forms of punishment are a thing of the past. If we make jails a living hell for the prisoners, then, we might just be sending out devils once they are released and re-integrated to society. To all "non-believers" of humane treatment of prisoners, and to all haters of our non-violent approach to rehabilitation, all I can say is ...get a life!"
got a link to the other stuff?

Working on that. I remember seeing this video a year or so ago :http://www.thefilter.com/WebVideo/27...LLER-THE-TRUTH which has since been taken down on the Warden's order (likely because the vid used some of the Thriller dance routine which is copyrighted).

The original vid was fairly well sourced (as Youtube vids go) in the vid itself and the description and linked and explained some of the issues the prison faced. Most of the complaints dealt with inadequate clothes/shoes and the harsh treatment of the prisoners that were practicing.

I imagine in comparison to other prisons in the region, it's probably pretty similar but one of the more disturbing things in the vid were the claims of sexual abuse and the use of the Warden's family seal/symbol as a tattoo marking "his" women. I have no idea if that is typical in prisons in the Philippeans but I found it a little disturbing, especially because I thought the orginal video was so cool.

Michael Jackson was a freak and a really weird dude IMO. Also, it's ironic that an alleged child molester would be held in such high regard at a maximum security prison. I always thought child molesters were in bad shape at prison.

Interesting point. Especially considering he is American and there are likely more than a handful of Americans scattered throughout the Filipino prison system for child sex crimes.

As far as i'm aware the synchronized dancing wasn't just to entertain wardens or make a popular video. I think the theory is that by dancing and training together the Prisons would gain a sense of unity, reduce crime, create positive atmosphere etc.

I'd still rather be on the outside of those walls.

Would you still hold that opinion if one of them had sodomized you with a broomstick?

It depends if I would like it or not. But if not I would get angry. But feelings do not have anything to say in this matter.
