Re: Penn. Teller. Nail gun.

Stop over-thinking this trick, if you've used a nail gun you should know that you have to press down to load a nail into the chamber. I am not going to watch a second time, but I am pretty sure he even misfires a couple of times on the board by not pressing hard enough.

I'd imagine the nail holes are drilled out beforehand so the nails aren't stuck in the board very tightly, with just enough friction so that they'll stay up when the magnet has pulled them up. But this also means they'll come up without much resistance even if he's not absolutely precise in how he lines up the "gun".

It's amazing how wild people's imaginations get when they don't know something (none of us "know" how the trick is done), and they can't stand not knowing, and they'll believe the wildest things, because believing the illogical isn't as discomforting as "not knowing".

(This isn't another post slamming religion, is it?)
You're right that we don't know for sure what the exact mechanism is. But if you watch the video carefully you can see the nails move up from within the board, they don't go down into it. The only reason people don't see this is because the familiar looking setup has conditioned them to expect the nails to travel into the board because "oh look, that's a nail gun and we all know nails come out of a nail gun, not into it". So to some extent people see what they expect to see, something magicians rely on all the time. Our perceptual expectations serve us well in 99.9% of situations but magicians will exploit this.

Re: Penn. Teller. Nail gun.

Actually, the end of the nail gun goes over the nail so when he pulls it back up it just looks like it's coming out of the board (if that's what your brain expects to see obv.) Our perceptual expectations ect... 99.9% blah blah.

Re: Penn. Teller. Nail gun.

The mechanism he's using is an air compressor and a nail gun.

The magnet theory is definitely the most laughable.

Yeah and if a magician said it during a trick then it must be true.

LOL if you think the nails are traveling all the way down to the metal

Re: Penn. Teller. Nail gun.

This thread is proof that Penn and Teller are ****ing geniuses... they are giving away the trick as you are watching them do it, actually telling you it's fake, and some are still confused because their presentation is so well done that you barely focus on Penn's admission. The ultimate meta-magicians. They don't even want to trick you, their whole act is proving that they could if they wanted to. The best part is that the first time i watched it cold, i was in total shock until I figured it out and laughed. Exactly the reaction they wanted.

you would think enough people would know this for this trick to not be impressive at all. maybe that's the point.

So basically you're saying the nails are the length of the width of the wood + 2" out of the wood. Doubt it. He'll say whatever he has to say to get your mind into believing the illusion.

Plus, if there was enough force of the nail gun to push it through the wood and stop on the metal, you'd hear it. Also, you'd see the board bounce off the table, imo.

I'm done talking about it. It doesn't matter either way. I'm not impressed with the trick and debating it is only making me dumber.
I think the reason the nails are sticking out so far is so that they are clearly visible to people even in the back rows. The trick loses some of its effect if it's difficult to tell when theres a nail and when there isn't one, as would be the case if the nail went all the way in or if it only stuck out a little bit.

Re: Penn. Teller. Nail gun.

I can't tell if the "nails are coming up out of the board" is a real theory or just blatant trolling .

Well, you can go to 1:35, pause it and compare the length of the nails he's holding up to the length of the nails sticking out of the board + the width of the board and get back to me, kay?
