Video #2 doesn't explain it. I figured it out, though. It's pretty simple, but it happened so early in the video that I had forgotten it. When they pick the girl out of the audience, they have everybody in the audience holding up their phones. Teller just looks around until he finds somebody with the same phone as their prop phone. In fact, they may have picked her already (without telling her, obviously) before the show even started if, say, they saw both her and her friend in the lobby with phones and saw that she was using a black iphone (it's important to pick somebody who isn't alone so that that person's friend can call the girl's phone).

Your previous post was talking about the swap which was answered in the video. Your explanation above is talking about something else. And yes, it does add to the explanation, that they need a phone similar/the same to the one they're going to swap when they bring the cutout on stage.

No, the problem outlined in the previous post, which my next post resolved, was that Penn still appeared to have her phone in his hand until he put it in the cup. That's where the swap problem came from. If he has to have her phone in his hand, he couldn't have swapped it out before then (including during the photo with Elton John). But if he doesn't have to have her phone in his hand, then that problem goes away and it doesn't really matter when he swaps the phone, as he has several opportunities.

Clearly they need to have the same phone for the swap, yes (as obviously they aren't just going to hope that the phone they bought matches a random one picked from the audience). But, of course, that's what the entire post was about: figuring out how to sync the phones.

That way when he picks it up and shows the audience, it looks like he still has her black iphone recording video.

Yes. What I was having difficulty figuring out was how he appeared to still be holding her phone after he dropped it behind the cardboard cutout, as obviously they aren't just going to use a random phone and hope that it's the same type of phone (or even color) as the one the person they bring on stage has.

Did you watch the beginning? Penn went around the audience to look for a person who "knew how to use the camera on the phone". Clearly he was looking for someone with an iphone 4.

I wasn't. Post 35 was a response to post 34 where the author thought my initial confusion was in how the swap was done. I was explaining that that confusion was instead in how he still seemed to have her phone in his hand afterward.
