i like the dual concept with building the town and mining, but the map gets really crowded.

Yeah I'm not really sure what you're supposed to do. My thinking is that once you've got all the gold from a plot, it's not coming back, so you should really wait for town building until after you've cleared out a section and bought another plot.

I pretty well set my towns up in spots where there would be a bunch of trees between me and the drop zone since I wouldn't bother bombing there anyway

that's what i did. and i held onto as much gold as possible until the goldrush or w/e and then sold it all. by then, the properties were cheap. i have $3m, 98%, and all the achievements. but the holy grail seems random.
