Kasou Taishou (translated: "Costume Grand Prix" or "Maquerade Contest") has aired semi-annually in Japan since 1979. Since then, it's been a popular competition in which amateurs perform short skits which are rated by a panel of judges.
There are ten judges who can give a skit 0, 1, or 2 points for a maximum of 20 points. Earning 15 points is considered a major achievement and earns a medal for the team (sometimes an individual).
Some of you have probably seen the show without realizing it. This video became popular on the internet after it won the competition in 2003.

The skits make extensive use of
kurokos, a stagehand usually in all black costume to imply they are invisible and not actually part of what's happening on the stage.
The participants are often remarkably ingenious and create stunning illusions, some of which the judges and audience don't understand even after the skit is over.
Here are some videos from recent competitions.
