Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! (the funniest Japanese show)

For those who visit Laughs or Links! semi-regularly, it should not be news that Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! (Downtown's I'm Not An Errand Boy!) has become popular on You Tube and has been linked here often.

The owarai (Japanese comedy) group of Downtown, Masatoshi Hamada and Hitoshi Matsumoto, along with their co-stars Shozo Endo, Tanaka Naoiki (together known as Coq au Rico) and Hosei Yamasaki have developed a good following outside of Japan due to their violent comedy, especailly the "No Laughing" games.

Unfortunately, a lot of their You Tube videos have been taken down. It appears that may benefit us in the long run, though. Hulu.com is now hosting Gaki videos. Presumably, they've got a deal which should get plenty of Gaki material officially available.

In the meantime, there are some ambitious online folks who are translating the show unofficially. It's just a matter of finding them when they aren't easily accessible on You Tube.

Most of the links below will be familiar to some of you. However, I doubt many have seen this first batch- the "No Laughing Hospital" game which aired just over a year ago in Japan.

No Laughing Hospital, Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Part 6

Part 7

Part 8

Part 9

Part 10

At this point, the No Laughing Hospital series is only about halfway complete. However, the translator has been very reliable at putting up a new part about every five days. So, the series should be completely translated in 1-2 months. In the meantime, the above links are 1 hour and 40 minutes of hilarity.

GAKI on Hulu is currently offering two classic series.

I highly reccomend the "24-Hour Tag" to anybody who hasn't already seen it. It was my first long exposure to the show and a great example of how outrageous their stuff can get. The second series, "Yamasaki vs. Moriman" is a series of fights between one of the Gaki cast and a female comedian named Moriman. They fight in a wrestling ring but use a large # of comedy props for laughs. The running gag will become obvious quickly but I enjoyed it to the end.

You Tube links aren't reliable for very long. Eventually, they will be taken down. But, they'll be replaced shortly afterwards. A You Tube search for "Gaki sub" will usually get you to English subbed videos.

No Laughing High School, part 1 (of 15)
I'm sure many of you have seen this series. It may be the best they've produced. It has a total of 15 parts. To see the rest, simply click the links in the "More From:" or "Related "Videos" collumn (or search the poster's videos).

Silent Libary, part 1 (of 7)
These are great. Random chance decides which of the five cast members and a guest get a cruel and usually hilarious punishment in a public library.

No Laughing Hospital, Part 11 is up. They clearly spent some money on big props for this series.

Here are some manzai (stand-up comedy) from Downtown. Most of the stuff I've seen is much more personal than what you would see on Leno or Letterman.

Matsumoto doesn't accept the concept of "sweet" curry.

Matsumoto buys a TV Taro (like TV Guide) and Hamada has a problem with McDonalds.

Matsumoto gets angry at over-sensitive parenting.

Matsumoto locks himself out of his apartment.

Downtown talk about their nose hair trimming tecniques.

Matsumoto has a problem at a toll booth.

Matsumoto tells a scary story. (not funny but interesting)

awesome find on the nurse game. I recall seeing it without subs and it's much better when you understand what's going on.

No Laughing Hospital, Part 12 is up. According to the translator, we are now exactly halfway through this series. So, I'd expect updates regularly through mid-June.

The translator is using a DVD version of the show. In the last 3:20 of this ten minute episode, there is a commercial for another Gaki DVD which had scenes which I've never seen on You Tube (either translated or not).

Here's some other stuff:

Hamada loses a bet on the Japanese Baseball Series and must endure a batsu game.

Hamada's Baseball Bet Batsu Game, Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

In this untranslated game, Hamada is put on trial for his acts of sadism, found guilty, and punished. The first 3:30 of the first video is narration (in Japanese) setting up the game. However, it's not necessary to understand the game. Once you get to the 3:30 mark, it's all physical humor. The payoff is extremely good.

I noticed the guy who posts the subbed hospital game also did a partial episode on the newest punishment game where they are reporters. Hopefully he decides to do that next.

Re: Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! (the funniest Japanese show)

what's the Japanese show where like 5 or so guys spin a wheel or w/e and whoever it lands on gets like a huge punishment, like getting hit by something or something like that, while the rest of the group has to remain really silent. It was a really really funny show, and there was this black guy in there and his emotions were absolutely hilarious. Sorry if this was it, I plan on watching these tomorrow.

No Laughing Hospital, Part 13 is up.

The "Fart and Eat" games are bizarre even by Gaki standards. In the first game, the crew is at a French restaurant to eat a five course meal. In order to be served a course, a person must fart first. The winner is the cast member who reaches the dessert course first.

In the second game, they are at a sushi bar. Again, you get served only after farting. The winner is the one with the most farts after two hours.

Here's another older game. In this one, Yamazaki has to stay in a school overnight and perform a piano recital. The game is fun because Yamazaki has a reputation for acting cowardly in a lot of games. So, the school is rigged with traps to frighten him.
