EDIT TO ADD: don't bother with Leon Lett, the Cowboys still won that game by 50.

Saw a vid once of a team trying a desperation game-winning FG, young kids, WAAAY out of the kid's range. The kick fell short by about 15 yards as time expired...only the other coach was an idiot, and had two kids playing back by the goal line as if to return the kick. One of the kids caught it on the fly, and thinking that ended the ball game, held it victoriously over his head as he ran back to the bench to celebrate with his team. He dropped the ball so he could hug and high-five and jump around with his friends. The whistle (rightly) never blew, the kicking team picked up the "fumbled" return, and ran it in ftw.

In the 90's, I read about a high school state championship game where the team with a small lead was trying to run out the clock. They kneeled three times, the defense called all three timeouts. During the final timeout with six seconds left on the clock, the coach with the lead, knowing that another kneeldown would give the ball back to his opponents, brilliantly instructed his QB to line up in the shotgun and take a safety. He would need to outrun the defense to his own endzone (the line of scrimmage was midfield), but whether he makes it or not, that should burn off the last few seconds.

Kid takes the snap, turns around, and heads for his own endzone, the defense in hot pursuit. He's at the 20, the 10, the 5....he crosses the goal line...

Thinking he's finished, he tosses the ball straight up in the air in celebration.

Ooops, too soon, he was supposed to run OUT OF the endzone, not INTO it. Live football, defense falls on it in the endzone, touchdown ftw.

I used to have it on DVD, the entire game. Gave it away to a friend.

The website I bought it from a million years ago is no longer there, sorry.

Disc One was the first three quarters (which nobody watches), Disc Two is the fourth quarter, with occasional breaks in the action to interview coaches, players, and the announcers, it's like getting commentary from all of them.

(My favorite play is at 1:35 in the YouTube vid, because he even manages to get out of bounds to stop the clock. That 88 makes 88% of the plays, he even kicks off. Favorite quote, out of about 1000 to choose from: "Look at 33 over there, he's getting his stuff back on!" And when I'm short stacked in a tourney, and fight my way back to chip leader, I can't help but blurt, "Y'all done missed the greatest comeback of all time. OF ALL TIME!")

(Heh, I just read the YouTube comments, a lot of people were surprised by the ending.)

what are the rules re the kickoff? the receiving team has to touch/fumble the ball before the kicking team can touch it? i think this is right but wanna check.

if so, it's a real shame bout the ending. who the **** fumbles three consecutive kickoffs? chokers.

I think the ball must travel 10 yrs or the opposing team touches the ball first before the kicking team can touch it. Usually it gets kicked really high into the air and everyone jumps for it. These are just anti-clutch plays.

I wouldn't even start celebrating if my opponent had a one-outer. Seen it go wrong too many times.
