The Mets vid reminds me that this thread needs a video of the crowd in the sportsbook the night Robin Ventura hit a walk-off grand slam in extra innings against the Braves. Players who bet over 7.5 and Mets -1.5 were celebrating a 7-3 win, but Ventura was mobbed by his teammates before he could touch all the bases. It was ruled a single, and the final was 4-3.

Came across this the first time today...doesn't fit too well with the title but it is pretty funny. Don't admit defeat early.

An Italian goalie has cost his side their season after prematurely celebrating a penalty miss.

The strange sequence took place during a penalty shootout between Italian lower league sides Termeno and Dro, where the winner earned a spot in the Italian sixth division.

Up stepped Termeno's Michael Palma with the shootout locked up at 4-4. His penalty attempt struck the crossbar and he fell to his knees in despair with his side's season looking to have slipped away.

Dro's Loris Angeli did what any goalie would do and ran off to celebrate but the ball was still in play and unbelievably took some back spin and rolled into the empty net six seconds later.

The goal was awarded and Termeno's place in the Eccellenza league was capped off when the final Dro penalty was saved.

It's been over 20 years, so my memory may be a little fuzzy, but I remember watching my older brother's little league game where a bases loaded walk-off walk was nullified due to the walked kid not going to touch first base, but instead left the field while celebrating. You're out kid.

This brings back a lot of memories. A friend told me he knew someone who bet 10K on the over of this game, he understandably claimed to quit sports betting.

Most of the sportsbooks immediately graded the game a 7-3 final, and a lot of tickets were cashed before the corrected score came over the wire. Once that money gets paid out, there's no getting it back, those bettors are long gone.

I was a brand new sportsbook supervisor that night, I had literally had the job only a month or so. When I saw the mob between 1st and 2nd base, I knew immediately there was a chance those extra runs wasn't going to count, so I wrote "Hold All Tickets" on the board, and left the final score column blank. People get worked up when they think they're not going to get paid, and I'm trying to keep the crowd chilled (it's late at night, there's only me and one ticket writer working in the sportsbook). The crowd really got worked up when NBC put up the R/H/E graphic with 7-3 in the R column, and the pronouncement of "FINAL" above it.

"We go by what the box score says, not by what NBC says," I explained, to nobody's satisfaction.

Thwarting my efforts at crowd control was the fact that the phone that never rings is ringing nonstop, as every supervisor I work with is calling from home, one by one, to advise me to hold up before I grade the game. I worked with five other guys behind that counter, from supervisors to managers to Director of Race And Sports, and all five of them called me consecutively to have the same conversation (they were all watching the game at home, separately).

After I quit booking in 2000, they went through the same thing in the very next Super Bowl on a Ray Lewis total tackles prop. The over/under opened at 6, got bet up to 6.5, and when he was named MVP, CBS interviewed him behind a graphic that said, "RAY LEWIS, Super Bowl MVP, 7 Tackles". Again, the crew I worked with is on their toes, and they're waiting for the official box score before they pay anybody anything.

When that graphic first appeared, the guy complaining the loudest pointed to it and said, "See? CBS says he had seven tackles!"

My friend Ed quickly replied, "You mean the same CBS that said Gore beat Bush a few months ago?"

I've never seen a loudmouth concede a point as quickly as that guy did.

By the way, in the box score, Lewis had 6 tackles.

I should note that I added the "a few months ago" to the quote. At the time, the disputed election was still fresh on everyone's mind, and that phrase wasn't necessary.

I worked Race/Sports for 7 years, been working in poker the 11 years since. I played online fulltime for one year, but decided that I wasn't emotionally cut out for the bankroll swings, preferring the security of a steady paycheck instead.

I dealt blackjack for two days, but hated everything about it, especially the "standing all day" part. Never bothered to learn to deal craps, for that same reason.

Know nothing about slots or keno.

EDIT TO ADD: Here's the thread about all my sportsbook stories, if anyone cares. I can't seem to open it right now, archives down?

There should be something in the software of the forum that doesn't allow people to post until they read the whole thread.
