I noticed that too. It's like, oh well my friend just got his balls crushed, probably dislocated his shoulder and might have internal bleeding while falling into a swamp. The sign probably says beware of alligators too.
Has to have been a prank/staged, right? How could she have thought that would work?
I don't know how common it is for people in wheelchairs to use escalator stairs, but it's quite possible if the escalator is wide enough. There are youtube videos of people doing it very successfully - I imagine it's just a matter of getting the right balance with your hands on the railings.
