Survived. It isn't clear if the lightning actually stuck the umbrella. If you watch in slow motion and HD, and pause at the right moment, it looks light the lightning hit the tree behind him.

I agree that the strike happened in the vegetation near the wall. I was outside on my porch during a storm about 25 years ago, and the lighting struck a bush about 12 feet away. I literally jumped out of the shoes. I dove back into the house and a pair of shoes that were tied tightly to my feet were still on the porch.
