pretty sure it is a fps and not a turn based strategy and nothing like the original whatsoever.

unless there is a different game

on further looking there looks like there will be a promising game on the 3DS,

there are 2 different games coming out. One is a FPS, the other an RTS.

This is a turn based strategy, and will be available on PC/360/PS3 I believe.

The FPS was already announced, this is new and separate from that.

Tanks and missiles were very satisfying in that game.

i have bittersweet memories of the original. on the one hand it was a lot of fun, but losing crew that you've levelled up for 7 hours to a well placed alien rocket was depressing.

will get the new one

Worst thing i ever did was naming my squaddies... After the exgf got mindcontrolled and shot a few of us in the back, the writing was on the wall for that relationship.

Man, I just remember one guy on my squad getting killed by a rocket that traveled across like 8 screens. The aliens' turns were always so haunting because they'd be in and out of shadows and this friggin' rocket just pinged him right in the face after I watched it flying through the water for like 10 seconds. I wish I remembered his name.

I remember the Demo for XCOM being super fun to play. The demo was also super hard to win compared to the normal game.

Damn those black aliens with the super huge movement range.

Only big negative about the regular game was the really brain damaged AI...

Dude really? I mean all things considered I think for its time the AI held up quite well.. I mean, many of the problems that plagued the game are ones that still plague the genre today.

Sidenote, were all the landing mission maps in the game randomly (procedurally) generated?? I feel like I don't remember there being any two of the same crash sites.

Landing in some farm land, having the first couple dudes out of the jet throw some flares out into the darkness and post up behind the landing gear for cover.... so awesome.

I never got to play the original XComs, but I played the spiritual successor Jagged Alliance 2 and the Silent Storm games and absolutely loved the game play. I like turn based strategy games anyway, but I really liked these games and how they implemented the battle system.

Will definitely buy this when it comes out.

I think it was an extremely fun game in spite of the AI..

You would routinely see aliens use up movement points and leave themselves out in the open.
The AI would rarely use rockets in an intelligent manner.
All the difficulty levels played exactly the same. Easy = Normal = Hard

The maps were generated with randomly placed predefined sets of tiles. All of a specific theme.

Thinking about the game reminded me of having to defend against base invasions. That was fun fun fun.

Also those knives were way overpowered in XCOM2. You could take out lobster men in one or two stabs.

ufo extraterrestrials

is this clone any good?

Also I am glad about there being two games

I think I remember reading that the clone wasn't very good, but it might be a different one I'm thinking of. Definitely one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Some of the best moments off the top of my head:

- The first time you capture a live alien using that silly stun rod
- Using the alien plasma weapons for the first time
- Using MC technology for the first time

I never played the original Xcom, but the idea behind this game seems amazing.
There's an alien invasion: You control a team of 4. There are different classes such as sniper, scout, heavy weapons, etc. Each has it's own abilities/specialties. As they fight, they gain experience and other perks. If they die, they perma-die and are replaced by a rookie who's specialties are unknown until they level into their respective class.

It's semi-turn based action, I'm not quite 100% how the fighting is handled, but I know you only get x amount of moves per turn.

Countries will ask for help and you have the ability to choose to help them or to help someone else. Your actions or lack of action determine how the war plays out - For instance, China's nuclear arms are under attack and you decide not to help. China will lose their nuclear abilities and will have military to help you. You can salvage alien weaponry to help you on the field while fighting OR you can bring it back to the lab to learn about alien technology to better your armies. You can't do both.

The game boasts that no play through will be the same, because the same scenarios won't be in every game.
