"Barely any kind of an aesthetic wrapper presenting them" - lol, what? Game is beautiful.

Dude's not wrong overall though - he's not the right person for this game, and that about sums it up.

eta: my gf (not a gamer at all) played it for an hour or two last night; the biggest challenge for her was navigating/controlling an FPS game, and she started enjoying it as she figured out the mechanics. She did the starting area, walked right by the symmetry puzzles without even seeing them (I didn't say anything), then went to the keep and did the 2nd walk-on-the-maze puzzle faster than it took me to do it. :/ She had fun with it though.

Decided to download this today to try it. Wasn't really a fan of Braid and never read anything before hand or payed attention to any news about the game. Currently 101+18.

**** the Jungle in general and one particular puzzle specifically.

have all lasers except jungle (barely dented) and middle town (stuck on the puzzle that resembles the audio puzzles, seems to be one of the last). sort of have no desire to do the jungle but i suppose i'm running out of other crap to do.

made some progress inside mountain too today but got sick of it.

took a day off, now up to 383+37. just missing middle town laser. unfortunately added a third puzzle to my to the "puzzles i had to cheat on" list:

first was the tree-shadow area's purple puzzle with the dual starting points. basically had the right idea initially, thought i tried every possible combination using that strategy (i must have missed the one correct combination) and then convinced myself it had to be something else. started applying a completely wrong strategy and finally asked dave to put me out of my misery with some super obvious hints to point me in the right direction.

second was the final puzzle in the tetris area with the checkerboard tetris piece. this was the only one of the three i really didn't give a good faith effort but for some reason my grasp on the tetris logic was (and is still) tenuous at best, especially the blue-squared pieces, and by the time i got to that one i decided i had enough.

third was the 7th puzzle in the jungle. tried for a very long time to do this legit and then broke down and once i started to brute force it i decided i'd just save myself the time and look it up online. seems that this puzzle gave lots of people on reddit problems too. even now that i know the answer i have absolutely no idea why it is correct and that's after reading the explanations on reddit too! i think i'm just not hearing what i should be hearing but this puzzle definitely thoroughly defeated me. rest of this section was a breeze too.

Jungle stuff is 100% the same experience I had, didn't have too much trouble with the others but that one puzzle was straight bull****.

That one jungle puzzle is the only one I've cheated and looked up the answer for.

I loved the jungle and basically ripped through it. Probably the easiest zone for me. Will have to revisit to check this last puzzle and see (hear) what's tripping people up.

Question for those at endgame:

At what point did you begin looking online for guidance on how to progress further? Or is this not necessary?

I've made substantial progress inside the mountain and suspect I'm nearing the end. I'm still 100+ puzzles away from what I've heard is the max and off the top of my head there's only a handful in the environment I'm aware of and didn't complete. Basically I can't imagine how Id stumble upon that many new puzzles, unlock alternate endings, etc etc naturally

After I got to the end I spent a lot of time looking for extra stuff to do in ALMOST the right place, so I eventually looked for tips on where to go online. I dont think the help is necessary since there are clues in the game. Maybe if I had just stopped playing and came back later with a fresh perspective I would have found it. Maybe.

Also, I had to look up the logic between the orange triangles.

And there is this ****ing puzzle that I solved through a mix and brute force and luck. I looked it up afterwards to verify that I had really understood how it worked. I had and still couldnt solve it. There are not a lot of bull**** puzzles in the game but this one is their king. Picture of the panel:
Spoiler:

imo you should avoid looking things up online unless you are absolutely stuck. I lost interest in the game a bit when I did it.

I described it in more detail in this post.

Kukra - yeah that puzzle is some bull**** too. I think I read that's the puzzle JB was referring to as the hardest one in the game.

I didn't, but im finishing at 523 +88 +0 and haven't bothered going through trying to find the rest since getting distracted by Don't Starve (very late to get it, tyvm latest steam sale!)

Kukra - haha, i found that puzzle before i found the sound puzzles so thought it was just a standard invisible mirror one and ''solved'' it according to what i thought were the correct rules, taking ages to work out, and when it didn't open i was super pissed. As goofy said, thats meant to be the hardest puzzle in the game (according to JB) altho i found "the challenge" harder overall i think (but much more enjoyable).

been stuck on the puzzle at the bottom of the mountain (via elevator) for hours. doesn't SEEM to be that hard and there really aren't that many possible combos. dunno why i'm struggling so much.

did this puzzle trip you guys up much?

Spoiler:
4 other puzzles inside?

There's kind of a trick to how it works you have to figure out. If you're trying to brute force things you're gonna have a bad time. I had to spend some time in mspaint for that one iirc.

Finished - "Endgame" trophy attained at 428+13.

Amazing game!

All lasers activated (to my knowledge), still missing one hidden trophy, will prob google wtf needed to do to acquire it.

I am by the looks of things pretty terrible at the +1 puzzles.

I don't have all the honeycombs, that's my first guess for the missing trophy. I left a good few panels unsolved also in various places once lasers activated without them. I have no idea how orange triangles work, although I have solved a few of them by random luck.

Safe to read through the thread again clicking all the spoilers now?

Some spoilers deal with your missing achievement, so be careful if you want to do it yourself.

In all seriousness, this is the reaction I expect from 99.9% of PS4 players.
pretty much summed up my feelings after about 10 hours of play. This game is depressing and not that fun IMO. I can appreciate some of what Johnathan Blow was trying to achieve in this game, but it simply didn't turn out to my liking.
