maybe GTAIV? Or Gears of War 1? But both games don't really have "christmas" written all over it... Other than that: sports games of last season usually have a huge price drop.

I have GTA, I didn't realize the price had dropped. I haven't played GOW1. I rented 2 and liked it. Do people still play that online?; I might just wait a bit and see if 2 goes on sale and then get it myself. Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you play portal in orange box? I can see not being able to get into the other games in the package, but Portal was amazing and I can't imagine anyone not having fun with it. But maybe everyone I know and I are way nerdier than average.

From what I can tell Portal is too main stream for nerds. Everyone likes it (as they should).

yeah I liked that, but I don't know that I'd replay it. I only had the game a week, played Portal mostly. Tried TF2, it was real laggy. Didn't have too much time left to get into Half Life.
Just not sure if I'd get much more play out of it if I owned it.

Seconded for Fight Night Round 3 and Crackdown.

Ninenty Nine Nights

Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom

Earth Defense Force if you have a friend to play local coop with - comically bad graphics but the gameplay is so incredibly fun

Culdcept Saga: Monopoly meets magic the gathering. Really fun and you can probably get it for $5 now.

Dead or Alive 4

Oblivion

My personal opinion is that every gamer should have played the half life games (singleplayer) once in his life. They are solid masterpieces of FPS-gaming. And they tell an interesting story. And it's fun to be "just" a scientist.

the F.E.A.R. games are solid too; many people find them really scary and intense and they should be pretty cheap by now. You can get the main game for less than $30 from amazon's marketplace. I think the extension ("fear files" which is playable standalone IIRC) is pretty cheap too. When the game came out for PC it was one of the games that needed a PC that didn't yet exist at that time.

Max Payne 1 & 2 for the classic xbox should always be great too.

Bought it on Ebay for a couple bucks and so far it's been a great game (only played for an hour or two though). Thanks.

thanks for the great suggestions everyone. What about Dead Rising? I've heard several people saying it was good, but don't remember anyone on this board talking about it. I think it's fairly cheap now too.

I personally thought it was amazing, definitely worth picking up for 10 bucks these days or whatever.

I'm looking for a copy of NBA 2K9 for the 360 and I'd like to offer NHL 09 to anyone who is interested in swapping.

PM if interested, please. Thanks!

Hey guys, looking for a little advice.

Looking to pick up a surround sound system of some sort and not really sure what I should be looking for/what would be a good buy.

I can't afford a great system at this point (where the speakers are $500+ each) however I'm looking to see if I can find something in the 300-500 price range that would be passible until I finally save up to get a good system.

Any suggestions?

Basically, there are two schools of thought on this:

a) Common thought is to get a cheap home theatre in box sound system. I don't know what the US equivalent of JB Hi-Fi (www.jbhifi.com.au) but I'm sure you can get something affordable for your price range. Best thing to do is to go and listen to the options yourself and decide which one you like.

b) The "experts" recommend that you start off with a decent amp and front speakers, and then add more speakers to it as you can afford it.

It's alot of fun also. Download demos!

The 360 has a hell of alot of good games. And the majority of them have demos, and they're free ldo.

I fully intend on doing this. But do I have to play stupid Blue Shift and Opposing Force? Steam sells just HL1 for $9.99, but HL1 + BS, OF, and Team Fortress (which I thought was free anyway if you had a paid copy of HL1?) for $14.99, so I pretty much have to do that.

Opposing Shift was honestly the best expansion pack ever made at that point, I'd definitely play it. Blue Shift was pretty meh, but I'd play it anyway if you're a completionist, pretty fast.
