This has actually been done except medieval and there's only one 'officer' controlling each opposing force. The name escapes me. It was an indie game from I want to say 2004. It was the same year that that indie game where you build bridges out of the various pieces came out. They almost certainly have come up with sequels/updates by now.

I thought it was alot of fun, but it didn't really 'hook' me for whatever reason.

Wow....this could be cool.

The Death of console and PC gaming?
Next generation "cloud" technology could change the way you play videogames forever.

I am surprised they got such big publishers already. Can someone explain why they said this, "In theory, you should be able to play Crysis on a netbook. A handful of us have played the game, at its highest settings, on a MacBook Air with the service."

Wow, that looks pretty sick. 5mbps connections (for streaming 720p graphics) aren't that common yet though, are they? Also, I have to imagine that a 100ms ping between you and the OnLive servers would make games feel kinda slow. It's one thing when you're playing a local game online and there's a tiny delay between when your actions "register" in the game world (which isn't always even entirely noticeable due to stuff like client prediction), but I feel like it's another when the entire graphics of the game are delayed by that amount.

That's a nice idea but imagine how much data you would end up downloading if you played a game seriously. That's not going to be cheap.

Yeah I had simliar questions as you guys which is why I was suprised it is going to be released so soon. Seems this will be huge in 2-3 years when 5mps is the norm.

THE LAST REMNANT :

Didn't see any threads about it. I've put in about 30 hours. Like most games I like, I'm going to start over now that I've realized some of the machinations of the gameplay. Still have a few questions.

Should I try and have each union specialized in either mystic or combat? How come sometimes Mystic Attack and Combat Attack cost different SP? What else did you wish you knew before you started playing? Is there any specific way I should attack the main quests/side quests? Any tips at all would be appreciated

I love the part where it talks about needing a pc or a console like device to be able to use it.

You're not gaming on a pc or console, you're gaming while using a pc or console!

I have been playing games like this since they were text based. There is still room for innovation. I know I have notes on stuff right now that I have never seen in any game before.

Take the "calculator" class from FFT1 as an example link

I was asking for ideas like that, not really standard stuff like "dragon knights". It is no big deal, but my offer still stands =)

I mean classes. Like you have your long distance versus short distance guys, physical versus magic attacks, leading to things like long distance/physical (archer, sniper) vs short distance physical specialists (thief/rogue/assassin or warrior), and high power instant magic guys who can fight up close and kill very quickly but have limited mana so they can't do it all day (mages) vs. low power/high endurance guys, usually with some sort of snare, who can fight from far away but need a long time to do it and have adequate mana to do so (necromancers killing with disease or death magic DOT's (damage over time) spells. There are equivalents for these classes in modern or ancient mythical settings, and years of study in all sorts of games about what works and what doesn't in balancing the classes. And there are other clases too, like healers and engineers. And there are divisions of classes into pure classes (specialists) and hybrid classes (generalists). You could probably write an encyclopedia out of all the back and forth thinking and actual practice putting this stuff into play that has already been done in game after game and tried out for countless thousands of hours in real time.

So much of this has been thought out already that it seems your basic structure is already there for you.

I agree with you pretty much, just not that it is pointless to ask. I am feeding off of the same pantheon of classes everyone else uses for the most part. Some stuff is a little more obscure, like can you think of 3 names for a ninja or how to make two different types of ninjas work in a game? It took me a little while to work this one out, and I still haven't finished their skills.

Once I get my submission to some companies for sponsorship done, I will report back with more details about the battle system and that should help. There are a couple classes here and there that are pretty unique, but most fit into the types you mention. I pretty much have enough classes, way more than most games already but wanted to see if anyone has a cool idea.

Good luck zen zen, sounds like a cool idea that you've put tons of work into. Let me know if I can help at all, just PM me or something, I'll be glad to lend any creative help I can.

I didn't think it was pointless to ask anything at all, just that your question was so broad and dealt with so many things already worked out that I wasn't sure what the point might be. It seemed so broad as to be scattered and unfocused, and I wasn't really sure how it could even be answered.

I'll say one thing -- many games set in old mythic type worlds have trouble knowing what to do with classes that can kill slowly but have plenty of energy/ammo to do it with. It's usually fun to have these guys in a game, but hard to manage them well because two of their prime skills -- a fast running skill and a snaring skill -- tend to get parceled out to other classes in MMORPG's when the creators run out of new ideas and effects to put on armor and weapons and to grant as new spells and abilities. When that happens, those classes, no longer unique, tend to become useless in a group because at least one of the other classes will get some version of it, and also have all sorts of other things to offer besides.

When you put together classes, be sure you don't have the reward system in a game eventually make them redundant. It's not an easy, as players will commonly and very vociferously demand everything for every class whether it fits or doesn't. This dynamic and lack of creativity undermines a whole lot of MMORPG's, in that they degrade into little more than warrior for fighting and aggro holding plus clerics to heal them, sometimes with a specialist class to bring the bad guys in close enough to fight. All the other classes tend to shrivel away by comparison, making people wonder what the point was of playing them. And then you get a very homogenous and narrow game and gameplay experience.

A similar game was made, called savage. I believe savage 2 came out recently.

I know we have a few industry people on this board, anybody at GDC?

2 fats, 1 medium, 1 skinny FTW!

Has anyone played this "Savage" game? Looks like it could be worth a try (since its free).

man, I've been playing Ice Hockey a lot lately, and 4 fat guys seem to dominate like it's their j-o-b. Makes no difference whether I'm playing the CPU or my brother, they almost always knock the other guy down, their shots are always fast and hard (esp. the big wind up slapshots), and if you always hit the dash button when you don't have the puck they're not really any slower than any of the other guys.
