I don't really miss manuals but I hate the way modern games have tons of long-winded handholding tutorials.

I miss manuals but just in a nostalgic kind of way. Buying games back when I was a kid meant a 2 hour drive to the nearest town - the drive back was spent reading the manual and getting excited about the game.

Also, publishers like Infocom and Sierra would make their manuals (and other stuff in the packaging) part of the game and include stuff you needed to play the game. A lot of infocom-games didn't need copy protection because you were screwed without the accompanying material anyway.

So yea - good memories and stuff. But not really something I want to bother with today.

I'd prefer to not have to read something that will take 10-60 minutes prior to starting a game.

I have very little nostalgia for manuals, and suspect that a big part of wistfulness about manuals is simply misplaced nostalgia for youth in general.

And that would be 'misplaced' how, exactly..?

sigh just upgraded my poor logitech f310 to xbox one s and it's so frustratingly hard to get it to work on windows 7, microsoft obviously making ******ed decisions for example by removing drivers from official sites and pretty much having troubleshooting for windows 10 only. I found the drivers online and on reddit but I can't still get it to work, argh.

Nostalgia isn't the right word exactly. Clearly people have an affinity for manuals beyond just the information they may provide, which in the internet era is completely redundant, but as I said, the artwork, the lore stories, the illustrations, they do enhance the experience for some people. But it's not like manuals were only a thing when we were kids, as I pointed out they were pretty standard for console games up till maybe 2012-2013'ish.

The way you guys are arguing about manuals and the different semantics here make me think you all would love playing werewolf in POG. All we do is argue with each other in the game.

Some awesome manuals contained lore and info beyond technical stuff. I still read the manuals for Warcraft 2, Sid Meier's Pirates, Sid Meier's Gettysburg, and WWIIOnline (this manual >>> this game).

A common theme of NES manuals was including a name and description and little backstory of all the monsters in the game. This is information that isn't necessary at all to actually playing the game but is just sorta cool to have. That sorta thing is what made manuals cool, not the whole "Press the A button to jump"

I remember buying Baldurs Gate II "In original box" on ebay years ago. That thing was so heavy that the seller lost money on the shipping.

Darksiders 3 was announced today. Pretty stoked as I was afraid that series was dead. If you haven't played the first 2 I recommend them.

All 4 of the NES Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest) games came with detailed manuals, world maps, enemy reference sheets, tons of cool stuff. All of which I still have.

Sweet, I liked the first two games. Some people may say too much inspiration from other games (like Zelda etc), but I thought they both were fun.

I liked the first 2 games, the only issue with the second one is that I played it on the Xbox 360, and it had game breaking bugs.

Once you completed it, you could do a NG+. Well, I'm going through it, and doing a boss fight. When you kill him, you're supposed to get some cutscene, and a new area opens up. Well, I didn't save it before that, so the autosave kicked in, and has it saved right after he dies, but before the cutscene. Cutscene never triggers, new area never opens, so your game is just ruined at this point.

There are several places in the game where things like this can happen. On the PC, it's not a big deal because of how many autosaves there are, but on the console, it's broken, and you have to start the game over.

Well, it's very complex, but it's not the complexity that requires a manual, it's the obscurity. The Dominions games, great as they are, leave the player pretty much in the dark about how anything works.

Paradox games, for example, are also very complex, but they have tool tips and menus and charts and **** all available ingame that explain everything. Dominions is just, hey, this unit does that? Wow cool I'll make more of them now that I know that.

Yeah that's fair, the user interface is basically nonexistent. Even with the huge manual and tutorial it's still pretty difficult to figure out. I never did understand how to play competitively against other people, I would just dick around for a while until someone with a far better army smashed me.

With that said the manual was quite enjoyable because of all the descriptions of the multitude of factions included the in the game.

To be fair, Paradox games are getting a bit better NOW. A few years ago a new paradox release meant an unplayable game riddle with bugs and with basic information hidden beneath 3 layers of horrible menus that covered the screen every time.

I don't think anyone would be able to play CK2 or EU4 (and let's not talk about HOI3) without a wiki to look basic modifiers up. I sometimes even see streamers, playing mainly paradox games for years, opening a wiki because they forgot something important.

And if you look at Hearts of Iron 4, they are still incapable of designing a modern and polished UI. The tech trees and color schemes come straight out of mobile indie games.

Devs still have a ton of trouble taking out complexity by obscurity from their games.

We are releasing our game tomorrow. Its a space-racing game for 1-4 players. Multiplayer can be played either on lan or online, we dont have game-servers so its player-hosted.
We are prepared to release bug fixes as we find them so your money wont be lost forever.

Didnt have time to do a proper trailer but here is a little teaser. Might still do a trailer next week if I have time (and energy).
