Alright, here's question that truly belongs in this "random" thread:

I have an original Wii (not Wii U) and my family and I have been getting into the Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Band Hero games. Have maybe 8 of them or so, including our favorite, Beatles Rock Band.

Anyone know of any way to acquire/download additional songs or DLC for these games anymore? Obviously can't do it via the Wii store, so I was thinking there had to be some way to download them on a PC and put them on an SD card.

I know it's probably not totally kosher legally, but I figure since the games aren't supported any more and Nintendo/developers don't make it possible for people to buy the DLC at this point, finding them for free isn't taking money out of anyone's wallet.

If this isn't cool to ask, I will not be offended if it is deleted.

There are resources available online that discuss how to turn your wii into a home brew machine which is fairly easy to follow.

Anyone play SpacePlan? It's a fun little game that can be played in a day.

It'll save your progress too if you want to come back to it. I had to play it in Chrome to get it to save. I must have had Firefox set to delete saved data when I exited.

dlk9s try asking at gbatemp, like master said it's very easy to mod a Wii and do exactly what you want to do. Finding the DLC will be the harder part although I'm pretty sure there's a way to put your own songs on there, I remember back in the day people would make their own custom GH isos.

If you run into problems then I can help with the Wii modding part, never messed with GH or Rock Band myself though.

I'm not interested in modding the Wii, just acquiring the songs that one used to be able to download. I guess if that requires modding, then it requires modding (perhaps it's not as simple as putting the songs on an SD card and popping the card in the Wii).

I did peruse a homebrew Wii site for a couple minutes and it looks like it could be a fun project, but I'm not going to do it with the Wii we have, lest I brick it. Maybe I'll pick another one up some day and try it out. I have a Raspberry Pi with RetroPit and all that, but using a Wii as an NES emulator would be fun.

Softmodding the Wii is really easy. I was terrified to do it but it took like 5 minutes and was super simple.

Yeah, I can always grab one on Craigslist or a local mom's exchange Facebook group my wife is on. Not overly concerned. Maybe I'll make it a project with my kids at some point.

It's very hard to brick the console, especially with what you want to do. I love the modded Wii, it can play almost every Nintendo game from one HDD.

Aaaaaaand Capcom is releasing the Disney Afternoon collection - NES Ducktales/2, Chip & Dale/2, Darkwing Duck, Talespin.

This was easily my most desired retro re-release, but I thought it was impossible pie in the sky due to licensing issues.

It's not announced for Switch.

Supposedly similar to the newer Mega Man collection in treating them like art worthy of perfect emulation and extras.

I was prepared to pay $250 for a Ducktales 2 cartridge if I had to.

One of the vanilla wow reboot sites is looking for volunteer devs. They use c++, MySQL, and trinity core, the latter of which I've never heard of. Maaaaaan, I wish I was experienced enough to get on and do that kinda work.

That Disney compilation is done by Frank Cifaldo's company Digital Eclipse who also did the Mega Man collection. If you're into retro stuff then follow that dude because he does some really awesome stuff. I think I posted his GDC talk here before, if not go check it out anyway.

The Mega Man collection didn't interest me at all when it came out. In my mind we'd already had a collection that included even more games (7-8). The announcement of the Disney compilation has made me appreciate the Mega Man collection in retrospect and I may well get that at some point too.

The Disney collection was literally my most desired retro gaming release/compilation and I am frankly shocked that not everybody shares the exact same tastes as me.

There are a lot of people excited but the games and cartoons are almost 30 years old so it's understandable that younger people don't really care.

I hope it sells well because you would have saw from Frank's talk that there's a pretty huge legal and technical hurdle in releasing NES/SNES/N64 games outside of Nintendo consoles. Rare Remix and Mega Man Collection are the only releases to have NES games running on non Nintendo hardware for example. It's a lot of work so I hope it pays off.
